The Christendom College Players will present Room Service on November 11-13 at the Warren County High School Auditorium in Front Royal, Virginia. Room Service, referred to as a “comedy about show business,” was one of the most popular Broadway hits of the 1930’s. Featuring a zany plot and characters, the witty lines are often delivered at a breakneck speed.
Dr. Patrick Keats, a professor of literature and experienced producer of plays at Christendom College, is directing this production and is assisted by college alumna Mary Harrington, as well as students junior Kelly Lawyer and senior Brianna Miller.
“Room Service is a very funny and engaging American comedy,” Keats says. “The energy of the play’s characters is certainly matched by the enthusiasm of our cast, which includes many freshmen. We’ve been having a great time and lots of laughs at rehearsals, and we are hopeful that this enjoyment will come through in the performances as well.”
The play tells the story of an energetic but short-on-money young producer who is anxious to put on a play, entitled Godspeed, which he expects to be a huge success. Despite having no money, the producer uses his connections with his brother-in-law, a hotel manager, to put up his entire cast and crew for no charge. All is well until Wagner, the tyrannical hotel supervisor, starts putting on pressure.
Room Service was filmed twice, first as a Marx Brothers comedy and later as a Frank Sinatra musical, re-named as Step Lively. The wild and crazy characters include a Russian waiter-turned-actor, a southern senator, a collection agency employee who never sleeps, and a host of other madcaps.
Leading actors in the play include freshman Zack Moody, who plays the wacky young producer; freshman Stephen Hyland as a brilliant but naive playwright; freshman Katie Brizek, his sweet and idealistic girlfriend; sophomore James Ciskanik as the flamboyant Russian actor; and freshman Rob Delancey as the fire-breathing hotel supervisor.
Showtimes will be Friday, November 11, at 8 p.m., Saturday, November 12, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, November 13, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students, and $3 for children 12 and under.
