The Crusaders rugby team crushed the opposition this past Saturday, not allowing a single point to be scored against them in the Jeff Hewitt Memorial Cup Tournament in Pittsburgh. Easily taking the Cup trophy, the Crusaders scored a combined total of 128 points in all three games, continuing their already-impressive season in extraordinary fashion.
In their first game, against Point Park University, the Crusaders were in excellent form, walking through to the semi-finals after a 59-0 victory.
The semi-finals against Bucknell University posed more of a threat to the Crusaders. With senior, and key hooker, Bobby Crnkovich out with an injured shoulder from the first game, the scrum had to rearrange. This, however, didn’t stop a determined Crusaders team from flying through to the finals, winning again without allowing a single point against them 29-0.
The final game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) looked to be the toughest game of the day. Christendom was outweighed man for man, but they were prepared for the onslaught from the trundling forward pack.
After IUP realised that their method of attack would not work against the strong defense of the Crusaders, they changed up tactics, but to no avail. The Crusaders proved that intensive conditioning at the beginning of the season and determination and commitment was the way to the top, as they outran IUP for the 40 minutes and came away with a 40-0 victory.
After three hard-fought matches, the Crusaders shut out the tournament, scoring 128 points and conceding 0.
The Crusaders next look forward to the biggest game of the athletics season: the annual Shield Match against Franciscan University of Steubenville this Saturday, April 18th. Find out more at www.christendomathletics.com.
