Two years ago this spring, the Shield Match was created to pit the Barons of Franciscan University of Steubenville against the Crusaders of Christendom College in a fierce game of competitive rugby. During the opening game held on Crusader Field in 2014, the Barons came up with the win, beating the Crusaders on their own home turf by a score of 26-23.
The following year, the Crusaders travelled to Steubenville, Ohio, to seek to bring the shield trophy back home to Front Royal. And they did. Big time. The Crusaders crushed the Barons 57-11 in front of a large crowd of Christendom Crazies who had made the 6 hour trek for the game.
The Crusaders hope to continue their historic 2016 season this coming Saturday, April 16, as they take on the Franciscan University of Steubenville Barons in the 3rd Annual Shield Rugby Match. The Crusaders will fight to defend the trophy in front of a packed home crowd, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Crusader Field.
The defending champion Crusaders will enter Saturday’s game with a record of 15-4, after routing the University of Richmond 99-15 last weekend. On the opposing side, the Barons are currently 5-2, and were the runner-ups in the 3RRC Rugby Championship last fall.
Due to the popularity of the Shield Match, parking for the game is expected to fill up quickly, and all are encouraged to arrive early to Christendom’s Front Royal, Va. campus.
