The Crusaders rugby team will take their next step towards a national championship berth this weekend, as they compete in the Cardinals Collegiate Rugby Conference tournament in Chesapeake, Va. Ranked #2 in their division, the Crusaders will take on Longwood University on Saturday at 2:40 p.m., with the possibility of playing Duke University as well later in the tournament.
This is the second year that the Crusaders have competed in the tournament, after being invited by the CCRC to play last year, outside the competitive schedule. This year, they will compete for the prize, taking on #3 ranked Longwood University as their first opponent. Longwood played well this fall, only falling to Duke — a team that Christendom dramatically drew in their opening day match.
Playing in their first full fall season, the Crusaders won huge victories against division rivals the College of William & Mary and the University of Richmond during the fall, showing off speed, perseverance, and intelligence on the rugby pitch — continuing their remarkable showing from last season. Their record of 3-0-1 impressed the Cardinals Collegiate Rugby Conference, earning them an automatic pass to the second round of this weekend’s tournament.
If the Crusaders leave this weekend as victors, they will compete as one of the representatives of the NSCRO in further tournaments in the spring, and will have an even greater shot at competing in the Nationals in 2017.
