Kiplinger’s Names Christendom College a 2017 Best Value College

December 16, 2016

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has named Christendom College a Best Value College for 2017 in its annual list of the top 300 colleges in the United States. The list, which weighs affordability alongside academic quality, bolsters Christendom’s reputation as the nation’s gold standard for affordable and authentic Catholic liberal arts education.

“We pride ourselves on offering a rigorous Catholic liberal arts education at an affordable cost. It is an honor to have this acknowledged so prominently by Kiplinger’s, who have been applauding our efforts for years,” says vice president for enrollment Tom McFadden.

Christendom earned the ranking of #54 on the list of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the U.S. for 2017, thanks to its strong admissions rate, percentage of students who return for sophomore year, student-faculty ratio, and four-year graduation rate. The college’s affordability further boosted its ranking, which Kiplinger’s based on sticker price, financial aid, and average debt at graduation.

This ranking is made even more impressive considering that the majority of colleges on the list accept federal funding, while Christendom does not. The college instead offers a robust financial aid program thanks to its many generous benefactors, giving students scholarship deals, a full-tuition scholarship competition, a scholarship price match program, and various loans and grants. College is an expensive venture, and Christendom is taking the lead for making sure that students can attend it at an affordable rate.

“There’s no way around it: college is expensive, and it’s going to stay that way for a long time. So, with our rankings — which weigh affordability alongside academic quality — our goal is to help students and their parents understand what’s really worth the price,” said Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.

Unlike other rankings, which include subjective criteria in their assessments, Kiplinger’s restricts its analysis to measurable standards of academic quality and affordability.

Kiplinger’s Best College Values for 2017 is now available online, and will appear in the print in the February 2017 edition of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, on newsstands January 3.
