What's your favorite class?
So far this year, my favorite class is Dr. Shannon's history class, The Division of Christendom. I've never been a big history person, but he has a way of drawing you into the class.
What do you like most about Christendom?
My favorite thing about Christendom is most definitely the people. There is something about Christendom that attracts a very diverse crowd, which makes it so interesting. Without the people Christendom would be a very different place.
Why did you choose Christendom?
A lot of people ask me this question and I'm really never sure how to answer. I attended the High School Summer Program my senior year of high school, but I was still determined to go somewhere else and then one morning I woke up and knew I was meant to go to Christendom. And that was it. I didn't apply anywhere else.
Plans after graduation?
I've thought about going on to get a degree in Psychology, but I'm not sure yet. Still praying...

New Students Welcomed at Orientation and Barn Dance

Two weekends ago all 115 new students arrived at Christendom's Front Royal campus.  A group of returning students formed a welcoming committee and helped new students move in and get their bearings on campus.  New students attended talks about the social, academic, and spiritual life at Christendom College.

Friday of the same weekend a reception was held for parents, which gave them the opportunity to meet various faculty and staff of the college.

Students enjoyed game night on Saturday, and a barn dance on Sunday held at Philosophy Professor Dr. John Cuddeback's family farm.  The barn dance started with a cookout, which featured grilled chicken and hamburgers.  Meanwhile, students were able to go canoeing in a nearby pond, enjoy hayrides, play volleyball, and test their strength in a tug-a-war competition.

When the sun had set, the dance started and Dr. Cuddeback led everyone in dance. Students learned traditional dances including the Virginia Ree - a Christendom favorite. The night was filled with "dosey dos" and smiles.

Returning students were happy to see friends and make new ones, welcoming the new students into the Christendom family.

Last Days of Summer Celebrated at the Luau Dance

Normally held outside by the sand Volleyball court and pool, summer thunderstorms moved the Luau dance indoors. And so the St. Lawrence Commons was transformed into a tropical paradise last Saturday.

"It was a great dance. Probably one of the best," Sophomore David Clark said. "Just dancing and having a blast with your friends who you hadn't seen all summer was incredible."

The student activities council worked hard to make the night a success with their decorations and great spread of food: tropical fruits, bright colored candy, tropical chicken shish-ka-bobs, and more.

Students took a break for a limbo competition. It was intense.  It came down to two Sophomores, Jessica Reineking and Emily Bozzone.  In the end Emily went the lowest.

Everyone danced and swung the night away to old favorites and beach themed music.

In honor of the 30th Anniversary of Christendom College
the Chronicler Online takes a peek into the past of the college each week.

Dr. Warren H. Carroll, Founding President of Christendom College

A 1968 convert to Catholicism, Dr. Warren Carroll was always graced with a devotion to the truth, which became particularly strong during his college years, prior to his conversion.  He saw what was wrong with modern education a long time before he saw what was right about Christianity.  He maintained that the people teaching in the university didn't care whether truth existed or not, and it didn't matter to them. But to him it mattered a great deal!

This burning desire to know the truth and share it led Dr. Carroll to found Christendom College in 1977.  He acted as president until 1985, and served as the chairman of the History Department from 1985 to 2002.  It is through this enterprise that Dr. Carroll has been able to reveal and develop his extraordinary skills as a Catholic historian, teacher, and author.

"Truth exists, the Incarnation happened" are words he frequently uses to describe his viewpoint, and that of Christendom College.

One of Dr. Carroll's favorite stories from the early years of Christendom is from its first day in operation.  He had learned the college was required to pay upfront a four thousand dollar bill for heating oil to heat the building, which they had no funds to pay.

"God never allows a project of which He approves to fail for lack of money.  He will never be outdone in generosity," Carroll recounts. "In that very day's mail came a scrawled and crumpled check for $3,500 from a bachelor professor at the University of Minnesota whom I had met just once in my life - George Bridgman.

So Christendom College flourishes to this day thanks to the generosity of George Bridgman and many other donors.

Dr. Carroll is now retired and lives in Manassas, Va., with his wife Anne. He will be returning to the College frequently this year as a guest lecturer. Look to Christendom's Podcast Website in the future for recordings of these talks. The schedule of his upcoming talks may be found by looking here.

with Mr. Tom McFadden, Director of Admissions

Q: When is the earliest I may apply to Christendom College for the Fall of 2008?
J.Q., Flowery Branch, GA

A. Well, there's no time like the present! You can apply for the Fall '08 school year as soon as you'd like. In fact, we've already received a bunch of applications and are about to start accepting students into next year's freshman class. Officially, though, our early action deadline is December 1 and our regular admission deadline is March 1. If you apply online there is no application fee.

Also, some people were thinking that they might need to wait to apply because they are planning on re-taking the SAT or ACT in order to reach academic scholarship levels (minimum 1920 on SAT and 29 on ACT). This is not necessary. Even if you apply with a lower SAT or ACT score, whatever the final score you submit prior to actually enrolling in Christendom is the one that we will use to assess your academic scholarship amount.

And lastly, Christendom does accept first-time freshmen in the Spring semester, as well as transfer students. So, maybe you might want to think about finishing up your senior year during this semester and get on with life and apply to Christendom for this upcoming spring. Crazier things have happened!

If anyone has questions about applying, visiting, scholarships, financial aid, campus life, rules and regulations, majors, core curriculum, transfer credits, or even about the food here at Christendom, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time: 800.877.5456 ext 1290 or tmcfadden@christendom.edu.

I hope this helps and thanks for asking!

Many high school students have lots of different questions about the "Way of Life" offered at Christendom. If you have questions regarding Christendom's academic programs, student life policies, cultural activities, or spiritual life, you can email the College and the Director of Admissions, Tom McFadden, will select one question each week from prospective students (or parents) and post their questions (anonymously) with responses in the Chronicler. Email Mr. McFadden tmcfadden@christendom.edu. by Thursday of each week.
