Any Hobbies? I enjoy... Sewing, knitting, cross-stitching, and various other needlework activities in the winter. Swimming, hiking, and soaking up the California sun in the summer.
What's your favorite class or professor? History with Mr. McGuire, because he is such a dynamic teacher, presenting the material clearly and in such a way that you remember the information. He is passionate about history and there is no better teacher than one who enjoys teaching.
Do you participate in any drama or music related activities? Yes, I am in Christendom's choir and I love to sing, especially when it is for the greater glory of God.

What is your favorite thing about Christendom College? I love the absolutely Catholic atmosphere. Here at Christendom everything is steeped in a Catholic culture and the people here are amazing. It is so awesome to go to a college where so many share your Faith.
Why did you choose Christendom College? It was more like Christendom chose me. After a lot of prayers and late nights wrestling with choices—God stepped in and here I am.
What do you plan to do after graduation? I am not entirely sure right now, but I hope that will become more clear as time moves on...

Dancing through Time

The tables were turned on the gentlemen this weekend, when the annual Sadie Hawkins Decade Dance was held Saturday night. Students were given an opportunity to visit the local thrift stores to prepare for the dance, which required dancers to arrive dressed to a corresponding 20th century decade.

Many students arrived wearing the tattered clothes of the great depression, or the flashy suits of the 50’s swing clubs.  Among the many outfits could be found World War II veterans, hippies and more than a few black leather jackets.

The amount of creativity was truly impressive, as many students spent days preparing detailed outfits.

Freshman Elise Anderson made sure to bring her camera and commented: “I thought the costumes were wonderfully varied, and so extremely detailed and creative!”

A costume contest was held at the end of the night, resulting in a tiebreaker between Seniors Sam Philips and Katie Fitzpatrick and Freshmen Nick Freeman and Noreen Daly. After a vote by round of applause, Sam and Katie walked away victorious.

The Decades Dance is the last dance to be held until after Easter Break.

Good Times at the Super Bowl Party, Especially for Giants Fans

The Super Bowl party was in full swing when six o’clock rolled around Sunday night. Over 100 students gathered at the John Paul II Student Center to watch the big game, with fans of both the Patriots and Giants excited for the historic match-up.

The Student Activities Council provided chicken wings, chips and an assortment of drinks and desserts throughout the night.

Football fans were treated to a spectacular game, which kept the crowd on the edges of their seats until the last second. Eventually Giants fans were able to celebrate as the heavily favored Patriots lost in an exciting final minute of play.

The Super Bowl party is held annually, and is always one of the most attended events of the semester.

Judd and Maggie Sing Out at Mardi Gras Party

Special guests Judd and Maggie performed at the Saint Kilian’s Café Mardi Gras party Tuesday night. Judd and Maggie Bolger are the older siblings of Shelagh Bolger, a sophomore at Christendom, and were accompanied by their younger brother Tommy on the drums.

Maggie, a Christendom alumna, was happy to be back visiting her sister and alma mater.

The group performed a two-hour show, playing a collection of their unique folk/rock pieces. Their sister, Shelagh, joined them in singing a Mamas and Papas cover, “Dedicated to the One I Love,” to the delight of the crowd.

The Student Activities Council provided a vast array of snacks and desserts, while the staff at Kilian’s Café provided their entire menu of refreshments. It was great way to say good by to "Ordinary Time" before Ash Wednesday started the Lenten Season.

Judd and Maggie recently released a new single, "White Washed Tub", now available on iTunes.

You can listen to the song and many others by visiting their website.

A New Kind of Homecoming

What were the thoughts of 21 Christendom juniors upon first coming to Rome? Well, we barely had time to decide before we were whisked off to another great treasure of the Church, the beautiful city of Florence.

Ash Wednesday was our first day of "intensive Italian," which is just one of many adjustments we have all been making since arriving.

I unfortunately don't have much time to tell you everything I would like to about our trip so far, but there was one special moment that I would like to share...

As soon as we arrived in Florence on Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Akers took us to the duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Our priest here in Florence, Fr. Mike Simone, said Mass for us in a little side chapel there. As we knelt in the cool, dark church, a thought struck me: here we are, a small group, just one of many in this beautiful church right now. What a fitting parallel that was to our semester in Rome: a small group participating in the greater tradition of the Catholic Faith.

We have had many tremendous blessings since we have arrived, and I'm sure I will have many wonderful stories to share with you throughout the semester. For now, please know that we are praying for the entire Christendom community in the beautiful city of Florence.

Our patron saints for the semester are St. Lawrence and St. Frances of Rome... so, St. Lawrence and St. Frances of Rome, pray for us!

Ciao!

An Inspiring Message from the Founder Before the Founding

The following was written by our founder, Dr. Warren H. Carroll, in February of 1977, six months before Christendom opened it's doors to the first 26 students.

Our College takes its name from the word, which embodies the Christian social and political ideal: a society, a culture, a government in which Christ the King reigns. To help extend His reign, insofar as His grace strengthens us to do so, is the heart of our mission.

We prepare ourselves, first of all, by learning, study and practice. We investigate the character of Christendom in past ages, the enduring principles, which must undergird any Christian society, and the particular new applications of these principles for our age in the area of society and government, which have been set forth by the recent Vicars of Christ in their social encyclicals. We learn the Christian and Catholic foundations for every field of study we enter and every action we undertake.

Above all, we try to build in our own lives and in our work with fellow Christians a mini-Christendom, a society, however small, in which Christ does truly reign.

Christendom College aims to such a Christian society, a microcosm of the social reign of Christ. As such it will strive to be an example and a model, as well as a center of study on what Christendom is and how it might be built anew even in our secularized age. The education Christendom College provides, primarily for laymen who will spend their lives in the world, will prepare and strengthen them both to maintain themselves and their families in that world, and for the better service to God within it.

There is no wider Christendom today. The very word, once commonly used to designate our Western civilization, is going out of style and even out of knowledge. Many have never heard it, cannot pronounce it, much less explain and serve what it stands for. At this moment of history, Christendom can exist only in small and self-contained places.

But the Christian in such a place never settles for it, never hides in it, for he has a message to bring to the world.

If this message is not heard and heeded, the most brilliant and sophisticated education imaginable turns to dust and ashes. Education under the reign of Christ the King—education in Christendom—begins with this Christian message and ends with new messengers, who will build the new Christendom as their forebears built the old.

Crusaders Drop a Close One in Overtime

The Christendom Crazies (our fans' nickname) came out in full force this past Monday to celebrate Senior Day, cheering on the three Christendom seniors playing in their final home game. Pate Quest, Bobby Lancaster, and Greg Monroe put forth a valiant effort with some help from Sophomore Matt Lancaster and Freshman Matt Rensch, but in the end they fell short in a thrilling overtime game against the Southern Virginia Knights, 90-88.

Quest looked like he would not be denied at times, playing hard-nosed defense and picking up several big steals, but careless turnovers plagued the Crusader offense all night. They could not pull away early after going up 13-4 and eventually fell behind 42-27 at the half.

However, Monroe took the team on his back in the second half sinking a variety of jumpers and lay-ins. Even with Monroe’s effort, the Crusaders needed help from behind the arc and they got it from Matt Lancaster and Rensch. Both players were brilliant from downtown with Rensch scoring 18 and Lancaster 17. Rensch hit all three of his free throws late in regulation to tie the game and each hit several big threes to cap a tremendous comeback. But with about eight seconds on the clock, Christendom still trailed 82-79.

They had one last possession and needed another clutch shot from one of their two sharpshooters. Rensch answered the call and hit the shot of his life as the horn sounded and the gym erupted.

Coach Chris Vander Woude had several players in foul trouble going into overtime and managed to keep them in the game with some masterful substitution. The team played their hearts out in the extra period, but again they trailed by two with a final possession. The Crusader offense tried to get the ball into Monroe, but Southern Virginia was prepared for him. Monroe kicked it out to Lancaster who had been lights-out throughout the whole game. Lancaster with his trademark flick of the wrist let it fly, but the shot fell just short and the Crusaders dropped the game.

The fans still gave a standing ovation to their seniors for a game in which they put it all on the line and played their hearts out. The three of them expressed their thanks for the strong fan support they received the next day at lunch in an announcement to the whole school. However, we should also be thanking them.

The school was proud to be able to watch Pate, Bobby, and Greg for the past 4 years. Thanks for the memories!

Q: What happens if my application is not complete by the time the March 1 application deadline comes around? I mean, what if everything is in except my SAT scores? Can I still be accepted? Will there be room for me or will I have to go on some sort of waiting list?
– C.W., Sioux Falls, SD

A: Well, the simple answer is that we will not be able to send your application to the Admissions Committee and as a result, you may end up on the waiting list for the Fall. Up to this point, we have been accepting qualified students as their applications are completed. But from now on, we will not notify anyone until April 1, but that’s if we have their completed applications by March 1.

Apply Today! If your application is not complete on or before March 1, but becomes complete, say, March 15, we will have to consider your application based on the amount of space we have available. We are only looking for around 125-135 students this year, and so far we’ve received twice the amount of deposits as we had last year at this time. We have accepted over 140 people already and all of these people have until March 15 to make their deposits. If they all make their deposits by March 15, well, we are full. If only 50 of them do, then we have space.

But we are expecting another 100 applications or so to come in to the office between now and March 1, and none of these applicants will be accepted or rejected until after March 15. So basically, if you have not completed your application by now, there’s no immediate rush, as long as you get it all in by March 1.

Thanks for asking.
