Welcome to the Chronicler!

We only have one more week to go before we get into finals here on campus, so things are starting to come to a close.  We have been receiving many deposits for the fall, as well as some requests for deposit refunds, so we will know more about our incoming class on Monday or Tuesday.  This is always an exciting time in the Admissions Office!

I would like to ask for your prayers for two little kids I know.  One is the son of my Assistant Director of Public Relations, Niall O'Donnell and his wife Sherry, and the other is my new little nephew, born this morning.  My nephew Brodie was born with half a heart and will be having surgery on Monday, May 4.  Niall's son Patrick (6 months old) was born with a congenital heart problem and will also be having heart surgery on Monday, May 4.  In your charity, please pray for these children, their parents, and the medical staff at the respective hospitals.

Until next week, God bless and Happy St. Joseph the Worker Feast Day!

A Formal Affair Student Profile

Name: Samuel James Joseph Pynes
Age: 19
Year: Freshman
From: Lincoln, NE
Major: Undecided
Hobbies? Singing
What's your favorite class? Hard question. I’d have to say Mr. McGuire. He makes history exciting and interesting with a proper perspective of the cause and effect of events and people in history—not just names and dates.
Do you play any sports? Though I didn’t stick with it this semester because of other commitments, I enjoy baseball. It’s the greatest sport.
Do you participate in any drama or music related activities? I’m a member of the choir. I also had the privilege to perform in The Secret Garden and the Mystery Dinner Theater.
What do you like most about Christendom? The close-knit community and all the great traditions from “birthday singing” to the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The people at Christendom have a good understanding of why we have traditions and why they’re important.
Why did you choose Christendom? Because it is very Catholic and very traditional.
Plans after graduation? Like most freshmen, I really have no idea. I’ve often thought about aspiring to a career in directing theater or film.

The Qu’ran’s Hidden Christian Elements
by Niall O’Donnell

Classics Professor Andrew Hayes delivered a lecture entitled “Elements of Aramaic Christianity in the Qu’ran” last Wednesday as part of the Library Events Series.
“What sort of traces in the Qu’ran are we talking about?” Hayes submitted. “Some times its a peculiar Arabic expression that betrays an originally Syriac [Christian] expression or image. Otherwise, it is an Islamic reinterpretation of a Christian story. Usually, these traces suggest a deliberate reinterpretation of Syriac [Christian] theology...”

Swinging Into Spring Formal with Class!
by Ashleigh Buyers

After hours of preparation and fun pre-dance dinner parties, at 8:00 on Saturday, April 25 Christendom students and faculty arrived at the classy Bowling Green Country Club to enjoy a wonderful night of dancing, live music, and all-out Christendom fun!

The stunning ladies and handsome gents entered the dazzling ballroom, meticulously adorned by the SAC, headed by Meghan Rubin. The team made the hall glow with bright, twinkling lights, freshly cut roses and a wonderful variety of refreshments.

No sooner had the couples entered the room then the talented musicians in the band Yesterday began a delightful two hours of swing music. Many of the couples were inspired by last week’s Swing Dance Competition and were more than happy to take full advantage of the orchestra's sounds. The crazy new moves and live music added some extra flair to the atmosphere of the evening.

“The live band was great! It added a nice touch to the dance, and made it extra fun and unique,” said Freshman Joseph Stephens.

For many of the seniors, this was a very special night, it being their last formal dance as Christendom students.

“The getting dressed up and going out to eat was one the best parts for me. I’m really going to miss it but I’ll hopefully come back for the homecoming dances as an alumna,” Senior Rachel Fogarty said.

Along with everyone, the seniors especially celebrated every part of the night, from getting ready to going out before, to dancing to their favorite songs that they have come to know and love. Most assuredly, they will always look back on spring formal with the fondest of memories for years to come.

Judd & Maggie
by Liz Sartor

St. Kilian’s Café was packed Wednesday night as students came to hear the amazing sounds of Judd & Maggie, the musically talented siblings of Christendom Junior Shelagh Bolger. The Syndicate of Dapper Gentlemen opened for Judd & Maggie.

J.P. Minick performed vocals for the Syndicate, with Brian Gallagher on the guitar and Andrew Grimes playing the bongo drum. These “dapper gentlemen” certainly can perform well. They had a very enjoyable sound, which was energizing, but relaxing at the same time. They were a great opening act for Judd & Maggie.

After the Syndicate finished their set, Judd & Maggie took the stage, performing both originals and covers. Their talent was some of the finest that the St. Kilian’s stage has seen. Their vocal harmonies were especially stunning. Judd not only sang, but also played the piano and guitar as well, while Maggie sang and played the bass. Their sister, Shelagh, joined them for a couple songs. One memorable song in particular was their rendition of the Mama's and Papa's song “Dedicated To The One I Love.” The performance was flawless.

The students enjoyed the opportunity for an entertaining study break, and a chance to hear some great music in the café, during what was one of the last chances to relax and chill before finals start!

The Arctic Eagle
by Niall O’Donnell

On Monday Founding President Dr. Warren Carroll concluded this year’s lecture series with the topic of General Carl Gustaf Mannerheim of Finland also know as the Arctic Eagle.

“The Second World War produced no better general, not MacArthur, not Patton, not Eisenhower, not Montgomery, nor Zuchov. He was as great as the most supreme general that America produced, Robert E. Lee. Twice Mannerheim saved his country and his people from the most terrible fate of a terrible century, conquest and subjection by Communism,” Carroll said.

Carroll described how Mannerheim saved Finland from Communist takeover following the Russian Communist revolution and again in Worlds War II against Stalin.

“In the end he secured his country which remained an island of freedom on the border of the Communist domain,” Carroll said. “Despite being out numbered massively and though past his 70th birthday, he gave Stalin the worst beating he ever received from anyone.”

Rugby Team Ends Season with a Victory

The Christendom Rugby squad topped off their season with a decisive victory on Saturday, April 18th, in the second game of a doubleheader against Carroll County Community College. Tom Debish and Peter McNeely led the backs to what ended up being a rout, and coach Brendan McGuire even participated on  the pitch, going headlong into the rucks with ease.
The first match was a heartbreaker, as the Crusaders lost 25-22 after they held possession inside the opponent’s 22-yard line for almost the last 10 minutes, and yet were unable to come up with points. Seniors Tom Francis, Kieran DuFrain, and Trevor Karas each had phenomenal last games as a Crusader, and Johnny Hambleton was up to his usual task, tackling runners from behind, rucking, and running through enemy gaps.
The match came after an April 4th thriller against Loyola University (NCAA Div. I) B Side, where the Crusaders had an outburst of points in the second half to make a rally that ended up falling short.
Christendom’s overall record on the year was 1-4. Substantial improvement was made each match, from the opening day disappointment against Winchester, to an improvement against Christopher Newport University, to almost deciding the match against Loyola and Carroll County. In addition, the majority of the team consisted of Sophomores and Freshmen, with Freshman Joe Long doing a superb job molding the back line into a competitor, to Sophomore Ben Ranieri heading the pack.

Many Freshmen and Sophomores eagerly await their try next season to improve upon this year’s effort.

Special Report

The People Behind the Magic of Christendom Events
by Ashleigh Buyers

Have you ever wondered who is behind all the events featured here each week? At Christendom, almost every dance, dinner, music feast etc. is organized by the hard working Crusaders on the Students Activities Council or SAC!

The first to greet and help you when you are moving into your dorm, the SAC also sends you on your way to a fantastic summer with the end of school dances, and of course everything in between to keep you motivated and social! Every year they put a lot of time and effort into making sure each event adds something special to the Christendom experience.

“Being in SAC really helps you see the big picture, because you can get caught up in your own world and you miss all the hard work that goes into it. You get a great sense of pride and appreciation when you able to step back after a project and see the beautiful thing that teamwork has created,” said Sophomore Janie Wells, an SAC volunteer.

Starting at the end of freshman year you can apply for one of the council’s several positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Advertiser, Tech Director, Religious Affairs, Athletic Director, and SAC Recruiter, along with the Presidents of each class. To help them out with their busy schedules, each position has one or two sub offices. Due to the many events the group puts on each year, each member is responsible for organizing at least one event. To ensure that the events go as smoothly as possible the SAC meets each week and discuss each event over yummy slices of Papa John’s Pizza—one of the many perks of being on the SAC team!

SAC President Dean Reineking said, “The best part about working on the SAC is the satisfaction you get after an event, knowing that everyone had a great time and that you helped make it happen.”

Thank you so much SAC for your tremendous contribution to Christendom!
