The
Program
Education should
lead the mind to its ultimate purpose: to know and appreciate the truth.
The Liberal Arts serve in cultivating the intellect, which is necessary
in the search for truth. In the courses on Theology, Philosophy, History,
and Literature, students will strive to answer key questions in those
disciplines, such as:
- What is the relationship
between faith and reason?
- What is the good
and why must we choose it?
- In what ways
do noble characters in literature convey transcendent truths by their
actions?
- Can one man make
a difference in the world?
Mass, Benediction,
Rosary, and Confession available daily.
The Courses
All courses are taught by full-time faculty of Christendom College.
Faith
and Reason
A Catholic has reason as well as faith. How can these be reconciled? How
can they work together to defend what we believe against tough objections?
Learn how serious theologians accomplish these tasks.
Ethics
What is good and what is evil? Why must we choose the good? This study
will elucidate the natural forms for the morality of human behavior, using
the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.
The
Moral Imagination in Literature
This course will focus on the theme of men and women faced with the need
to make moral choices, often in difficult and agonizing situations. The
students will read and discuss a series of short poems, plays, and stories
which dramatize this theme in various contexts and settings: ancient and
modern; political and social; scientific and religious. Several noteworthy
films, likewise dealing with the importance of making sound moral choices,
will also be viewed and discussed.
History
Makers
This course will provide students with an understanding of how, as Christendom
College founder and historian Warren H. Carroll says, "one man can
make a difference" in history. Students will read stories of various
Catholic individuals who made a difference throughout history, like Pelayo,
Constantine, St. Thomas More, Charlemagne, etc.
