Feb. 4th, Front Royal, Va: CRUSADERS AMAZING COMEBACK CUT SHORT. The Christendom College men's basketball almost completed one of the greatest comebacks in Christendom Athletic's history on Monday against the JV team of Southern Virginia University!!!!! Christendom started the game off to a great start going up 13-4 early on at Crusader Gymnasium, that lead was quickly trimmed by SVA and then turned into a 13 point deficit by halftime due to many turnovers by the Crusaders due to the pressure of Southern Virgina. The second half saw SVA build a 20 point lead with about 17 minutes to go in the game, that was the last time Southern Virginia could feel comfortable with their lead! For the next 17 minutes Christendom unleashed a flury of steals, layups and three pointers from a variety of individuals. The Matt's, being Lancaster and Rensch hit numerous 3's, including 5 from Matt Lacaster in the 2nd half alone, to fuel the rally as Pate and Bobby created defensive chaos that turned over easy layups for them and Greg Monroe. Down 9 points with 40 seconds to go, the Crusaders hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers that brought the game to within 3 after SVA hit their freethrows. This left about 6 seconds on the clock when Matt Rensch took the ball the length of the court and hit a game tying 3 point shot as time expired in regulation. Crusader gymnasium might never had it's sound-resistant walls tested as they were this night. The teams traded baskets back and forth into overtime and with a few seconds left Christendom got the ball down 2 with one shot left, Pate passed to Greg Monroe who found Matt Lancaster but his three bounced off the front iron. The final SVA - 86, Christendom 84, many fans and staff who were present commented on what an exciting game it was and how they had never seen anything like it before. Greg Monroe led Christendom with 25 points, Pate Quest added 23, Matt Rensch finished with 18 while Matt Lancaster added a career high 17 points and Bobby rounded out the scoring with 11. |

Feb. 10th, Media, Pa: CRUSADERS GET FIRST WIN AGAINST DIVISION III OPPONENT. The Crusaders beat St. Joseph's of Brooklyn (Div III intended) 62-60 by a last second layup from Freshman Matthew Rensch. Despite being udersized in nearly every position the Christendom Crusaders finished strong in the Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament that was hosted at Williamson Free Trade School outside Philadelphia. St. Joseph's had a starting line up that dwarfed the crusaders and yet the game proved to go to the smart and strong willed. Many players contributed key minutes with both Sam McMahon and Joe Townsend giving great minutes and gaining key rebounds and defensive stops despite giving up inches and over 50 lbs per player. The crusaders led most of the game in large part to Matthew Rensch and Greg Monroe who along with Bobby and Pate paced Christendom in scoring. Rensch also shut down one of St. Joe's best perimter players limiting him to only 11 points. The end of the game found the score tied with 8 second left, Joe Townsend inbounded the ball to Greg Monroe who found Matt Resnch at about half court who proceed to go by his man and when another man came to help he hit a reverse layup as the clock struck 1 second left; St. Joe's last second heave was unsuccessfull and Christendom claimed 3rd place over a tough Division III bound opponent. Matthew Rensch was named to the all-tournament team. |

Feb. 16th, Lanham, Md; CRUSADERS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO 4 GAMES IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! The Roanoke Bible College eagles had beaten Christendom the last time the two teams met by 2 points; this time the Crusaders would leave no doubt who deserved the honor of the Shenandoah Chesapeake Conference championship. The crusaders led by seniors Greg Monroe, Bobby Lancaster and Pate quest gave Roanoke a balanced offensive attack while shutting their high powered run and gun offense down. Roanoke was limited to under 10 points on fast breaks which contibuted to the success of the Crusaders. Sam McMahon and Joby Norton came off the bench to play a great defensive game while making smart decisions on the offensive end. It was definitely a team effort as 9 players got in the game and all but one scored a point in the game. Matt Lancaster and Matthew Rensch continued their onslaught from the perimeter dialing-up many important 3 point field goals while Greg Monroe dominated inside the paint. Matthew Rensch and Pate Quest held 2 of Roanoke Bible's leading scorers to under 10 points each. The final score read Crusaders 74-60. Greg Monroe was named to the all tournament team after his 27 point performance against Washington Bible the night before and his 16 point effort against Roanoke Bible. Matthew Rensch was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring 17 points against Washington Bible and 26 against Roanoke Bible and holding his player defensively to under 10 points in each game. This proved to be the last time the Crusaders would step on the court for the 2007-08 season due to the bad weather the last game scheduled to be against Davis College (Binghamton, NY) was cancelled. The Crusaders finished on a very high note winning their last 4 games, "It seemed things were just starting to click" said Coach Vander Woude, "Many players were contributing on the defensive and offensive ends, lots of guys were making very smart and heads up plays and other guys were hitting open shots; the team definitely came together." This was the last game for seniors, Bobby Lancaster, Greg Monroe and Patrick Quest. " A coach can only ask for hard work, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, these three had all of these attributes and did a great job of leading this team and teaching those skills to the players and the will be sorely missed not only by the team and myself but by the whole Christendom College community" said Coach Vander Woude. |
