College Announces Thomas S. Vander Woude Memorial Scholar-Athlete Scholarship and Golf TournamentFebruary 25, 2010
Christendom College is proud to announce The Thomas S. Vander Woude Scholar-Athlete Scholarship for the fall of 2010.
Former Athletic Director Tom Vander Woude, who died saving the life of his youngest son on September 8, 2008, was dedicated to the character development and personal formation of young people, especially in the areas of both intercollegiate and intramural athletics. This award will strive to offer students who excel in academics, leadership, and athletics the chance to attend Christendom. These students will be given the opportunity, as Thomas Vander Woude believed, to be formed mentally, spiritually, and physically. The scholarship will be awarded to one incoming freshman each year, as the fund permits. More scholarships hope to be added in the future, as well as an endowment for the scholarship fund, providing a truly lasting legacy.
The scholarship award has been initially funded through the generous contributions of a number of friends of the College, including Mrs. Mary Ellen Vander Woude, widow of the deceased Thomas Vander Woude. Christendom offers many athletic opportunities, including inter-collegiate sports such as rugby, basketball, soccer, golf, and baseball; club sports such as boxing (which is hoping to be inter-collegiate next year); and many intramural sports such as 3-on-3 basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, wiffle ball, flag football, and dodgeball.

Until recently, students wishing to pursue athletics at Christendom have not had the opportunity to receive scholarship money for their athletic talents. With this new scholarship, students interested in receiving a highly rigorous academic education and playing competitive sports while in college can have both.
To help with the initial funding, the Athletic Department will host a golf tournament in October. The tournament, named in memory of the deceased Thomas S. Vander Woude, will kick-off the College’s annual Homecoming weekend. The proceeds from this golf tournament will go directly to the scholarship award and to the athletic department.
The Thomas S. Vander Woude Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Friday October 8, 2010, at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club, in Front Royal, Virginia.
Anyone interested in more information about the golf tournament or those interested in applying for the scholarship or donating to the scholarship should contact Athletic Director Chris Vander Woude at email@example.com.
