April
1, 2004 Last year's success was due in part to the fact that, for the first time, the College held two different sessions of the same program, allowing students to select the time during the summer that fit their needs best. Seventy-four high school juniors and seniors traveled to Front Royal from across the United States and abroad to spend time soaking up the Catholic Faith and culture in the sometimes hot and always Catholic climate found at Christendom. Already, the coordinator of the High School Summer Program Shalon Spring reports that applications to the Program are at an all-time high. "I think that the word is spreading about our Program and that a number of the students who attended last year are returning this year and are bringing some friends. From the response of last year's participants, it is clear to me that they were all deeply impressed with Christendom and what we offer," she said.
The other part will be comprised of trips down the Shenandoah River in canoes; hikes through Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains; exciting softball and volleyball games; attendance at an Orioles baseball game in Baltimore at Camden Yards; a trip to the Nation's Capital to visit the John Paul II Cultural Center and the monuments and museums; and a special evening of fun and comraderie at College President Dr. Timothy O'Donnell's house. "We know that there are other ways that juniors and seniors can spend their summers," says Christendom's Director of Admissions Paul Heisler, "so we try our best to make sure that the time the students spend with us on our campus is both fulfilling and culturally edifying. I think that part of our success is due to the fact that we are located in such an ideal setting, with mountains and rivers all around, yet at the same time, we are a mere 65 miles outside the Nation's Capital. And as a bonus, a number of our recent alumni and current students serve as counselors for the participants, enabling the highschoolers to become better acquainted with not only Christendom College, but our students and alumni as well."
