Professor Dr. William Luckey to Lecture at Austrian Scholars Conference

qPolitical Science Professor Dr. William Luckey will deliver a paper entitled Starting Over: The Rebuilding of Catholic Social Teaching on Economics at the Austrian Scholars Conference (ASC) on March 15.

“The paper will critique the manner that papal social encyclicals on economic subjects are written,” Luckey said. “Catholic social teaching should be rebuilt by beginning with a good, thorough theological and philosophical view of man, and give general, helpful moral guidelines. This will also prevent them from being used for ideological purposes.”

The conference, which will be held from March 13-15 in Auburn, Alabama, is the international, interdisciplinary meeting of the Austrian School. "For scholars interested or working in this intellectual tradition, it is the event of the year," the ASC's website boasts.

Luckey is one of a very few economists who have studied economics and Catholic social teaching putting him on the cutting edge of the development of Catholic social teaching. His advanced understanding of the economic mechanisms of society made him an easy choice for the ASC.

The ASC is the pre-eminent gathering of Austrian economists in the US and possibly the World. Usually five hundred people, including many foreign scholars, gather to both give papers and to attend. The conference combines all the opportunities of a professional meeting, with the added attraction of hearing and presenting new and innovative research, engaging in vigorous debate, and interacting with like-minded scholars who share research interests.

Luckey received his B. A. from St. John's University, New York, in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy, and served in the United States Marine Corps. He received an M. A. and Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from Fordham University. In the 1990's he received an M.B.A. from Shenandoah University and an M.A. in Economics from George Mason University where he was a student of Nobel Prize winner James Buchanan. Luckey is currently a Professor in the Department of Political Science and Economics at Christendom College where he has taught since 1984.
