The Death of Our Founder

Jesse
† Dr. Warren H. Carroll (1932-2011)

Warren H. Carroll, Founding and First President of Christendom College and Chairman of its History Department for its first twenty-five years, died on Sunday, July 17. Aged 79, he received last rites prior to his death in his home.

As an historian, dates were very important to Dr. Carroll. In the 5th Volume of his History of Christendom series, The Revolution Against Christendom (pages 275-279), Dr. Carroll wrote about the Carmelite Martyrs of Compeigne, who died on July 17, 1794, and on whose feast day he died.

From a 2002 story from the Arlington Catholic Herald (written by alumna Maria Gaetano O'Brien): "Christendom College Founder Dr. Warren H. Carroll recalls meeting Pope John Paul II several years ago during a private audience in Rome, and being introduced as the founder of Christendom College in Front Royal. The pontiff leaned over, looked into Carroll’s face and said, 'You have done a great work for the Church.' Carroll’s eyes were misty as he recalled the moment recently. 'It was the crowning moment of my life,' he said simply. 'I am going to put those words on my tombstone.'"
