Christendom College will welcome 84 students and their accompanying family members for the 2021 Padre Pio Full-Tuition Scholarship Competition on Saturday, March 20. The event, which brings the best and brightest Christendom applicants together, will see competitors vie for the opportunity to win one of three full-tuition scholarships.

“At this time, we have received more applications and deposits than any other time in our history,” says Director of Admissions Sam Phillips. “On top of that, we’ve had more high school students visit campus than ever before, and this weekend’s competition has attracted the largest pool of competitors in the history of the scholarship event. Christendom is offering something very unique and valuable in higher education today: a time-tested, Catholic liberal arts education in an authentically Catholic environment where students learn the Truth, live the faith, and thrive as Catholics.”

Although the 84 competitors might be nervous about the competition, the majority of them will experience a homecoming, in that over 60% of them are alumni of the college’s Best Week Ever high school summer program.

In order to qualify, each competitor had to score at least a 1280/27/84 on their SAT/ACT/CLT, respectively, putting them in an academically elite group of incoming students for the 2021-22 academic year.

As part of the competition, students will have a timed essay and will interview with a scholarship panel comprised of faculty and staff. From the pool of competitors, three will be awarded full-tuition scholarships, while five more will receive a $5,000-a-year runner-up scholarship. All participants who are not chosen as winners will receive a $1,000 competitor’s scholarship.

While on campus, students and their parents will hear presentations from College President Dr. Timothy O’Donnell, Vice President for Enrollment Tom McFadden, Director of Admissions Sam Phillips, and Academic Dean Dr. Ben Reinhard. After the competition is complete, competitors and their families will tour the new Christ the King Chapel, enjoy a delicious Irish-themed dinner, and be entertained at a special St. Patrick’s Day celebration emceed by Dr. O’Donnell and featuring performances by current students as well as some competition participants.

Past winners of the Padre Pio Full-Tuition Scholarship Competition have hailed from all over the United States and from a multitude of educational backgrounds, including private school and homeschool. Last year’s winners — Michael Stapleton, Clara Raabe, and Rodolfo LLobet — came from Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia respectively, and are now all thriving at the college.
