Christendom mourns the tragic passing of alumnus Michael Echaniz ’20, who was killed on March 10, 2022. A dear friend, son, brother, and uncle, known for his passion for education and evangelization, Echaniz was 23.
Echaniz is the son of alumni John ’93 and Sharon (née Alessandro) Echaniz ’95, and grew up near Christendom in Front Royal, Virginia. While a student, he was known for his sweet nature and deep devotion as a friend. He participated in plays and musicals at the college, including the musical Anything Goes, in the college’s swing and waltz dance competitions, and in the college’s debate society as well.
In the classroom, he found a love for teaching, particularly in his political science and economics classes from professor Dr. Joseph Brutto. Brutto helped him discern a vocation to teaching, which he then pursued post-graduation. Echaniz moved to Texas after earning his degree in 2020 and was a teacher for Great Hearts Teaching Academy in San Antonio.
Echaniz will be deeply missed by the entire Christendom community and all are encouraged to pray for his soul and for his family at this time.
A Holy Hour will also be held for Echaniz in the Adoration Chapel at St. John the Baptist Church in Front Royal, Virginia, on March 10 from 7:30-8:30 pm. The 11:30 a.m. Mass in Christendom’s Christ the King Chapel will be offered for the repose of Echaniz’s soul on Monday, March 14.
Many friends and family have asked for a way to honor Michael’s memory. Michael’s family would be grateful to honor his memory in a permanent way through a memorial at Christendom College, such as a scholarship fund or a chapel dedication. Contributions can be made to a memorial fund at this time here. The family will choose the appropriate memorial at a later time.
May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
