Christendom College history professor Dr. Christopher Shannon recently released his latest book, American Pilgrimage: A Historical Journey Through Catholic Life in a New World. Telling the story of the Church from the colonial period to the late-twentieth century, Shannon’s book offers a new look at the history of the Catholic Church in the United States, telling the story of the Church through the best of current historical scholarship.

Shannon, who earned his Ph.D. from Yale, has been teaching and writing about American Catholic History for over two decades, including his recent series of columns for Catholic World Report,  “The Past Present.” In American Pilgrimage, Shannon offers his most comprehensive look at Catholic life in America yet. Distinguishing itself from countless other histories of the Church in the United States, which often suffer from an excess of either scholarly detachment or popular triumphalism, American Pilgrimage seeks instead to draw on the best of current scholarship to tell the story of the Church.

In the book, Shannon narrates the story of the Church from the dramatic efforts at evangelization in the colonial period, to the Catholic urban villages of the immigrant Church, to the struggles to reimagine tradition in the late-20th century. In shape, it follows this story through the Augustinian contours of the ongoing struggle between the City of God and the City of Man—a struggle that takes place between the Church and the world, within the Church itself, and within the soul of every Christian.

Shannon is an associate professor of history at Christendom, teaching courses ranging from American Catholic History to Irish American History and the Medieval World. His books include Conspicuous Criticism: Tradition, the Individual, and Culture in Modern American Social Thought (Johns Hopkins, 1996), Bowery to Broadway: The American Irish in Classic Hollywood Cinema (University of Scranton Press, 2010), and with Christopher O. Blum, The Past as Pilgrimage: Narrative, Tradition and the Renewal of Catholic History (Christendom Press, 2014).
