Christendom College alumnus Joseph Lewis ’95 has released his latest book, Rediscovering the Joy of Children & Family: Why the World’s Declining Birth Rate Crisis Can No Longer Be Ignored. Marking his first foray into nonfiction, the book addresses the pressing issue of declining birthrates worldwide, offering both sobering statistics and a much-needed message of hope.
“[Rediscovering the Joy of Children & Family] is quite different than my previous two books, both of which were fiction,” says Lewis. “This is a nonfiction work that I truly believe is a book for our times. Ultimately, the book has a hope-filled message and discusses much of what the Church teaches about marriage and the family while reaffirming the joy that children bring to the world.”
Lewis, who earned his master’s in theology from Christendom’s Graduate School of Theology, previously authored The Ghosts of Westhorpe Academy (2018) and its sequel, Miracle at the Mission (2022), which won First Honorable Mention for Young Adult Fiction from the Catholic Media Association the following year.
Rediscovering the Joy of Children & Family is a deeply personal project for Lewis, the culmination of over a decade of research into this growing global concern. By exploring the causes of declining birthrates and the blessings that children bring, Lewis provides an insightful and inspiring narrative. His expertise in theology and education lends a thoughtful and compelling perspective, making this book both informative and uplifting.
Beyond his writing, Lewis has dedicated much of his career to Catholic education. After earning his master’s from Christendom, he taught theology at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia, before serving as Director of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He later returned to teaching as the theology department chair at Devon Preparatory School for eleven years and now teaches high school history at Regina Luminis Academy in Berwyn, Pennsylvania.
Lewis joins a growing list of Christendom alumni who have used their education to impact the world of writing and journalism. Many have authored fiction and nonfiction works, while others have pursued careers in Catholic journalism, contributing to Catholic News Agency, The National Catholic Register, and other media outlets.
