Christendom College President George A. Harne, Ph.D., has released a new episode of the Christendom Conversations podcast, featuring a thoughtful discussion with theoretical physicist and cosmologist Dr. Stephen Barr. Together, they explore the relationship between science and faith, the great figures of the Scientific Revolution, and deep philosophical questions about the universe.

During the conversation, Dr. Barr also delves into the ways modern scientific discoveries have challenged a strictly materialistic picture of reality, the apparent fine-tuning of the laws of physics, and the important distinction between fine-tuning and the Intelligent Design movement. Drawing on thinkers from both the past and today, Dr. Barr considers what the laws of physics can and cannot explain.

Dr. Barr’s discussion with Dr. Harne follows his lecture at Christendom’s Faith & Science Conference, where he spoke on “Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict.”

Stephen M. Barr, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Delaware and former Director of its Bartol Research Institute. Dr. Barr received a PhD in Physics from Princeton University, and continues to do research in theoretical particle physics, especially grand unified theories, theories of CP violation, neutrino oscillations, and particle cosmology. A sought-after author and speaker on questions of faith and science, Barr is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and is the author of Modern Physics and Ancient Faith (Univ. of Notre Dame Press, 2003). Dr. Barr is also the founding president of the Society of Catholic Scientists, which was founded in 2016 and has 2,700 members.

This marks the twenty-first episode of Christendom Conversations, following September’s episode with Christopher Carstens, in which Harne and Carstens explored the profound significance of the liturgy, how the laity can best participate as the Church teaches, and the path to authentic engagement with tradition.

Christendom Conversations is part of Christendom College’s expanding podcast network, which offers listeners and viewers rich engagement with the Catholic intellectual tradition. Through in-depth interviews with Catholic scholars and cultural leaders, the podcast explores timeless questions and enduring truths.  New episodes are released monthly.
