missionTwenty-five percent of the students studying on Christendom College’s Front Royal, Va., campus will do missionary work during their spring break this year. The college’s robust annual mission trips program will send out a record 90 students, along with members of the faculty and staff, on four different mission trips across the globe.

“Our students are incredibly generous—they love to give, they love to serve and to help those less fortunate than themselves, and this love of service is rooted in their love for Jesus and the Church,” Mission Trips Program Director Mike Brown says. “The Mission Program has unquestionably been a real blessing and source of many graces for both our students and for the College.”

Each student is responsible for raising the funds to go on their respective mission trips, which are often life-changing experiences.

This year, 34 students and four staff members are going to Guatemala. In Guatemala, Christendom’s head chaplain, Fr. Donald Planty, will lead students as they work to bring the sacraments to remote villages. Students will also build a pump and aqueduct system to bring water to a remote mountain village. Twenty-four students and two staff members are going to the Dominican Republic to work at the Diocese of Arlington’s mission. Thirteen students and one staff member are going to Peru to work with the Missionary Servants of the Poor of the Third World at their school for young women and their house for abandoned and disabled children. Fourteen students are going to the Bronx to work with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal at their homeless shelter for men.

Besides the missionary trips offered during academic break, students assist those in need on a local level through the student club Outreach. The club visits nursing homes, works at soup kitchens, sponsors canned food drives, as well as volunteers at the local Crisis Pregnancy Center. Throughout the year students respond to their school’s motto, “to restore all things in Christ,” and sacrifice their free time for those in need.
