Christendom College opened registration for its ever-popular Experience Christendom Summer Program on December 1. This highly ranked program, designed for current high school juniors, will be offered in six separate one-week sessions during the months of June and July.
Drawing students from across the nation and worldwide, the program allows students the opportunity to discern whether an education at Christendom is in their future, and aids them in their understanding of the benefits of a liberal arts education, taught from a Catholic worldview, encompassed by a vibrant Catholic culture.
The cost to attend a session is only $500, with opportunities to request financial assistance if necessary. All sessions are expected to fill quickly, attracting about 45 students to each session.
“The one thing I can guarantee is that everyone who attends the program will leave satisfied, and happy that they spent the week on our campus,” says admissions director Sam Phillips. “Every year, when we survey the attendees, they have nothing but good things to say about their experience and give it an overall ranking of 4.78 out of 5.”
Students spend their mornings taking a variety of liberal arts classes—Philosophy, English, History, and Theology—then, after Mass and lunch, students spend their afternoons and evenings enjoying a number of recreational and social events. Activities generally include: canoeing on the Shenandoah River, hike and cookout on Skyline Drive, swing and contra dancing, bowling, participating in a talent show, and attending an Irish barn dance.
Robert Gasperson, a senior from North Carolina who participated in the 2014 program, believes that although Christendom is not a university, the academic level of the school is beyond anything he could expect from most colleges, even some Ivy League schools.
And Jack Whelan, from Virginia, was blown away by the entire program.
“I went into the program expecting to have fun, to grow in my faith, and to be intellectually challenged. My expectations were blown away. The program was better than I could have imagined,” he says.
One of the highlights of the program is the opportunity the students have to meet other young Catholics like themselves who are trying to live good, Catholic, well-balanced lives. Through this program, they make friends for life, and learn more about all that Christendom has to offer. In fact, students continually say that they feel closer to their new friends whom they only knew for a week, than with their life-long friends from back home.
“Christendom’s summer program was amazing, and it was one of the best weeks of my life. Why? The classes were cool and the professors were awesome. The activities were unbelievably fun. The counselors were some of the most authentic and most fun people I’ve ever met,” says Zach Hamar of Connecticut.
