mount-feb-rugbyCrusader rugby will take on #1 ranked Mount St. Mary’s University this Saturday, February 20. The game marks the home opener for Christendom’s hard-hitting rugby team, with the match beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Crusader Field.

This is the second time Christendom has faced the highly ranked Blue Knights of the Mount, after scoring a huge comeback win against them last spring, 39-27. At that time, the Mount was in the midst of the Regional Sweet Sixteen tournament. This year, the DII team is again in the hunt for the national championship, playing first in the regional championship this April.

When Christendom hits the rugby pitch on Saturday, they will enter the game with a current record of 5-2 after starting their season last fall — a first in Crusader rugby history. Even while missing key players, the Crusaders managed to defeat top schools on the field, including the College of William & Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University, and the University of Mary Washington.

After this weekend’s game, the Crusaders will continue playing some of the nation’s biggest schools, including Cardinals Conference champions Duke University on February 27. The Crusaders will also play in the Four Leaf 15s Tournament in New York City, the Cherry Blossom Tournament in Washington, D.C., and the Jeff Hewitt Memorial Tournament, which Christendom won last year without conceding a single point in three games. At home, Christendom will host the University of Richmond and the Franciscan University of Steubenville, the latter for the annual Shield Rugby Match.

Christendom’s rugby team enters 2016 with much to look forward to this season, in light of last year’s successful season. Not only did Christendom take home the Shield Trophy after defeating the Franciscan University of Steubenville, an NCAA Division III team, on their home turf, but they also won huge victories against Mount St. Mary’s University and George Washington University, finishing the season 7-2.
