golf-2016Christendom will hold its seventh annual Thomas S. Vander Woude Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, October 14, at the Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club in Front Royal, Va. The tournament, which attracts Christendom alumni and supporters from across the country each year, raises funds for the college’s Thomas S. Vander Woude Athletic Scholarship.

“It is amazing that we are about to have our seventh annual golf tournament named after Dad. His love for the formation of young people was demonstrated not only at Christendom but throughout his whole life. The success of this golf tournament and the scholarship fund that it supports is a testament to his legacy and memory,” says dean of students Chris Vander Woude.

Participants who attend the tournament will enjoy a day full of golf, a BBQ luncheon, and the chance to compete against fellow alumni at the beautiful Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club, ranked by Golfweek Magazine as the “#3 Best Course you can play in Virginia.”  Players will enjoy numerous competitions during the course of the day, such as “Closest to the Pin,” “Longest Drive,” and others. Prizes include vacation packages, sports apparel, golf equipment, and much more.

golf-2016-2Each year, the tournament raises more than $10,000 for the Thomas S. Vander Woude Athletic Scholarship, a program that offers exceptional student-athletes the chance to attend Christendom College.

“It is tremendous that, in Dad’s memory, scholar-athletes are assisted in their ability to attend Christendom. Through the scholarship fund, these student-athletes are able to be educated, formed, and impact Christendom in their pursuit of greatness in the classroom and on the field. I am so appreciative for all the players, sponsors, and volunteers who continue to make this golf tournament a wonderful day of friendly competition and camaraderie for a great cause,” says Vander Woude.

Former Christendom College Athletic Director Thomas Vander Woude―for whom the scholarship is named―died saving the life of his youngest son on September 8, 2008. He was dedicated to the character development and personal formation of young people, especially in the areas of both intercollegiate and intramural athletics.

Recipients of the Thomas S. Vander Woude Athletic Scholarship are given the opportunity, as Thomas Vander Woude believed, to be formed mentally, spiritually, and physically. The scholarship is awarded to two incoming freshmen each year, as funds permit.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To become a sponsor or register for the event, visit christendom.edu.

Payment by cash, check, or credit card will be accepted on the day of the event, but registration before October 2 is highly encouraged. For further information, please contact Chris Vander Woude at cvanderwoude@christendom.edu.
