Franciscan University’s First Chancellor Rev. Michael Scanlan, T.O.R., was awarded Christendom’s Pro Deo et Patria Medal for Distinguished Service to Church and Nation in 2007.

Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, the man who helped Franciscan University of Steubenville become the faithful Catholic university it is today passed away on January 7, 2017. Like Christendom’s founder, Dr. Warren Carroll, Fr. Scanlan was a pioneer in the renewal of faithful Catholic higher education in America. Fr. Scanlon was awarded Christendom College’s Pro Deo et Patria Medal for Distinguished Service to Church and Nation in 2007 during Christendom’s 30th Anniversary Convocation.

“He was a personal inspiration to me and a great friend of Christendom College,” Christendom College president Dr. Timothy O’Donnell said. “He shepherded Franciscan University through a profound renewal in fidelity to the Church as a model for other established Catholic universities to follow.”

Eternal rest grant unto Fr. Michael Scanlan, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.
