The Christendom Crusaders will take Christendom rugby to their biggest stage yet this coming weekend, as they play in the NSCRO 7s National Championship in Philadelphia. One of only eight schools to make it to the championship out of 74 contenders, the team will begin play on Saturday morning at Talen Energy Stadium as they compete for the ultimate prize.

After finishing 16-3-1 in 15s play this past year, the Crusaders are bringing their talent to the nationals after winning the St. Mary’s College NSCRO 7s national qualifier back in March. Their seeming rise out of nowhere caught the attention of many, including Rugby Today in their preview of the upcoming championship.

“Christendom College is one of the most fascinating teams to make its way to Philadelphia. The Front Royal, Virginia School boasts a male population of 200 students — the smallest in all of NSCRO,” says the article. “The Crusaders are led by sweeper Derek Casey and the elusive Joey Kuplack. Brothers Joe and Mike McMahon add a nice balance of power and finesse to a pretty well rounded team.”

The Crusaders will begin the championship in pool play on day one, taking on Colby College at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday — another team playing in the NSCRo 7s championship for the first time. At 11:20, they will take on Wisconsin Stevens Point — another first-time contender — before playing their toughest match of the day at 1:00 p.m. against New Mexico Highlands University, the two-time NSCRO 7s defending champions.

If the Crusaders are successful on Saturday, they will compete in the Championship bracket on Sunday, with the times for those games to be announced after Saturday’s matches.
