Crusader cross-country led the pack for Christendom Athletics this week, with both teams bringing home their first-ever trophies at the USCAA Westmoreland Invitational. Elsewhere, Lady Crusader volleyball won game 2 of a tournament at home and men’s and women’s soccer both took tough losses to Shaw University. Crusader rugby played their first game of the season against the University of Virginia, falling 47-12.

This is the second-straight strong showing for Crusader cross-country this year, now in its third season under coach Michael Stanislaw. After performing well at the Bridgewater Invitational last week, both teams made an even stronger impression in Pennsylvania. The women’s team placed second overall, while the men placed third. Together, they beat out several Penn State satellite schools and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Back at home, Lady Crusader volleyball started their Saturday with a loss against Notre Dame of Maryland, but quickly bounced back in their second match against Penn State Fayette. Michaela Pennefather and Celina Albisu played some of their best volleyball of the season, helping to lead Christendom to a 3-1 victory. The Lady Crusaders are now 3-5 on the season.

Crusader soccer, coming off their win against Berkeley-NJ, started off on the wrong foot in wet conditions against Shaw University, falling 0-2 early. Michael Urankar gave the Crusaders a boost with a goal later in the first half, before Pete Day tied the game 2-2 at the close of the first half. Shaw managed to get another goal in the second half, however, enough to seal the game for them, 3-2. The Crusaders are now 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Crusaders did not play as close in their match, falling 12-0 against Shaw. The Lady Crusaders are now 1-2 on their season.

Away from campus, Crusader rugby began their season down in Charlottesville, playing the University of Virginia. This was the Crusaders’ first match on UVA’s Grounds but it was, unfortunately, a loss — 47-12. The Crusaders will next play against the University of Maryland-Baltimore in their official home opener on September 15.
