The men’s and women’s basketball teams wrapped up the first half of their seasons this past week, with the Crusaders going 1-1 in their final two games — including a backboard breaking stunner from 6’ 11” sophomore Luke Schultz — and the Lady Crusaders scoring a victory in their final match.

The Crusaders entered their match against conference rival Patrick Henry College desperate for a win after riding a four-game losing streak. More than just that streak was broken, however, after sophomore Luke Schultz dramatically shattered the backboard at Crusader Gymnasium after dunking on Patrick Henry. The moment punctuated an impressive showing from the Crusaders, with the team ultimately winning 94-61. Patrick Pennefather scored a season-high 20 points and finished with a triple-double, while Luke Schultz and Shane McCrum both finished with double-doubles respectively. The win also marked their first win in their first game against a conference team this season.

In their final match of the fall, the Crusaders fared less well, losing to Goucher College 96-65. Luke Schultz again led the way for the Crusaders, scoring 20 points in the losing effort, with Johnny Echaniz behind him with 13 points.

The Lady Crusaders entered their match against Patrick Henry looking for their first win of the season, after starting with three losses, all away. Playing at home seemed to reinvigorate the Lady Crusaders, as they took control of the game from the very beginning and never let go. Gemma McMahon and Helena Briggs both scored 19 points, with McMahon also finishing with 12 rebounds and also 10 blocks. Both players were crucial to the Crusaders eventual win, 73-17.

Both teams will next play on January 11 at Cincinnati-Clermont. For more information, please visit christendomathletics.com.
