Thrilling is the best word to describe the Crusaders basketball team’s return home on Saturday, as they held off conference rival Southern State for a 61-58 victory — their third straight win. Elsewhere, the Lady Crusaders basketball team fell 58-46 against Central Penn at home, snapping their four-game winning streak.
The Crusaders high-scoring win against Appalachian Bible last Saturday gave them the much-needed momentum they were searching for, leading to another victory against Patrick Henry on Tuesday before returning home on Saturday. The game marked the first matchup for Christendom and Southern State this season after their previous game was cancelled, with both teams entering the game hungry for a victory. Christendom started strong, putting up 31 points in the first half to lead 31-19. Southern State took off in the second half, however, led by the incredible 27-point performance of Bruelle Thompson. Christendom’s defense was put to the test, with Southern State pulling within 2 with 12 seconds left in the game. The Crusaders held on, though — 61-58, marking their third straight win.
Also at home earlier in the week, the Lady Crusaders aimed to keep their winning streak going against Central Penn. Looking to play better than they did in their previous matchup against Penn, the Lady Crusaders fell behind in the first half, before keeping the game close in the second. Mercy Willson again wowed the crowd, leading the Lady Crusaders in points with 20, but it was not enough to overcome Penn. The Lady Crusaders fell 58-46, ending their winning streak.
The Crusaders will next play Washington Adventist at home on February 14, while the Lady Crusaders will take on Patrick Henry on the road on February 11. Find out more at christendomathletics.com.
