Christendom to Honor Dr. Janet Smith and Fr. Robert Spitzer at 40th Commencement Ceremonies

Christendom College will celebrate its 40th Commencement Weekend on May 10-12, 2019, and will honor Humanae Vitae expert Dr. Janet Smith and author Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., at the ceremonies on Saturday.

Dr. Janet Smith will deliver the commencement address for this year’s ceremonies on May 11, where she will also receive an honorary doctorate.

Smith is the author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and of the Right to Privacy and the editor of Why Humanae Vitae Was Right: A Reader. Her articles have been published in many academic journals, and she has been a regular columnist for the National Catholic Register and has appeared on Fox News, CNN, and EWTN. Smith has also served three terms as a consulter to the Pontifical Council on the Family and currently is a member of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission.

Fr. Robert Spitzer will also be honored at the ceremonies, receiving the college’s St. Peter Canisius award before deliveringsome remarks.

Fr. Spitzer, is the author of many books, including New Proofs for the Existence of God, and has appeared on Larry King Live — where he famously debated Stephen Hawking — the Today Show, The History Channel, and PBS. Fr. Spitzer is also the president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith and the Spitzer Center, and has taught courses on faith and reason, metaphysics, philosophy of God, and philosophy of science at Georgetown, Gonzaga, Seattle University, and St. Louis University.

The Diocese of Arlington’s Bishop Michael Burbidge will be the celebrant for this year’s Baccalaureate Mass on Friday. Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Communications, Bishop Burbidge is the fourth bishop of Christendom’s home Diocese of Arlington, after previously serving as the bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh.

Since its first graduation ceremony in 1980, Christendom College has honored outstanding individuals who have rendered faithful service to the Church and nation, and whose lives can be emulated by the graduates and the college community.
