Christendom College has once again been included in the Cardinal Newman Society’s list of recommended faithful Catholic colleges, as published in the 2019-20 Newman Guide. Chosen for being committed to uniting faith and reason and striving to be faithfully Catholic, Christendom is one of only 15 colleges in the United States included in the guide, which calls the college “a standard…against which other Catholic liberal arts colleges are measured.”
“We are honored to be once again named to the Newman Guide,” says vice president for enrollment Tom McFadden. “We are fully aware that Catholic families are searching for faithful Catholic colleges, and we are committed to offering the best Catholic liberal arts educational experience in the nation. In today’s increasingly secular culture, our academic and student life policies are truly counter-cultural, and we are proud of that. We hope to continue to be a leader in the Catholic college market, as we pursue the Truth and work to help our students achieve success in life, and beyond.”
Christendom has been honored as a Newman Guide College since the first guide was published in 2007, thanks to the college’s commitment to the Magisterium in its educational practices and student life policies. According to the Cardinal Newman Society, colleges are not recommended lightly, but only after a careful review, making a recommendation a sure sign of a college’s faithfulness for prospective students and their families.
“Colleges are not members of The Cardinal Newman Society; there are no member fees, and the Newman Society does not represent any college,” says the Society. “The colleges recommended in The Newman Guide are selected entirely at the discretion of the Newman Society following careful review of each college’s activities and policies. We do recommend and promote certain colleges as models of strong Catholic identity, primarily to assist Catholic families who are navigating the college search, but also to highlight exemplary models of strong Catholic identity.”
The Cardinal Newman Society takes these recommendations very seriously, as evidenced by the removal of two schools from the Newman Guide this year: Mount St. Mary’s University and DeSales University.
“After careful review, we have decided not to recommend these universities to Catholic families for the 2019-20 edition of The Newman Guide. Our recommendation does not hinge on single issues, but rather a comprehensive review of the institutions.”
Christendom does not take its Newman Guide recommendation lightly, but rather strives to ensure that more and more students are able to thrive in a faithfully and vibrantly Catholic culture on campus each academic year.
