Freshman baseball phenom Thomas Sullivan has been named a USCAA All-American for 2020-21, as announced by the athletic conference this week. Other members of the baseball team also joined him in earning awards, including five Academic All-Americans for 2020-21.
Sullivan was voted to the Baseball Second Team All-Americans by the USCAA for his outstanding contributions on the field during the 2021 baseball season, joining other top athletes from across the country. Over the course of the year, Sullivan led Christendom in batting average (.462), on-base percentage (.580), slugging (.590), stolen bases (4) and walks (10).
In addition to Sullivan, senior Caleb Wilson earned an All-American Honorable Mention from the USCAA. Wilson finished up his Crusader career strong, hitting .412 on the year and driving in eight runs.
Christendom’s strong performance extended beyond the baseball diamond in 2021 as well, with five student-athletes also earning Academic All-American honors: Max Henrie, Stephen Buonocore, Thomas Baird, Caleb Wilson, and Frank Scarchilli.
While participating in a varsity sport is demanding, these students showed the ability to prioritize their studies and balance commitments— a trademark of Christendom’s athletic program. To be named an Academic All-American, an athlete must achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours over the preceding academic year, all while participating in a varsity sport. Overall, 35 total Christendom student-athletes earned Academic All-American honors for the past academic year.
Academic excellence was seen throughout Christendom’s athletic teams in 2020-21, with an overall cumulative GPA average of 3.39 for the entire athletic program.
Christendom’s athletic program seeks to develop students’ athletic abilities, build character and encourage balance between academics and athletics. In fact, Christendom has a history of students being awarded for their athletic and academic talent, including the entire athletic department earning the USCAA Presidents Cup in 2019, which is given to the school with the most Academic All-Americans and whose athletes have the highest GPA.
All of these accomplishments bear testament to the athletic department’s success in helping student-athletes become leaders, both on the field and in the classroom.
