Christendom’s basketball teams continued their strong starts to their seasons this past week, with both teams picking up wins. Women’s basketball remained undefeated at home but took a hard loss on the road, while men’s basketball pulled off a comeback win.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have had historically great starts to the season, entering the week with undefeated records. On Wednesday, the women’s team looked to remain undefeated against Central Penn in front of a packed crowd and quickly took control of the game, going up 24-16 in the first half. Catherine Thomas and Kate Walz continued to lead the way for Christendom, with each putting up six in the first half. The second half went just as well for Christendom, with Miranda Keller throwing up big numbers, including eight points and six rebounds. Christendom ultimately won 55-41, with Thomas and Keller both walking away with double-doubles on the night.
On Saturday, Christendom faced their first real test of the season against Mid-Atlantic Christian. Christendom held the lead through the first half, but Mid-Atlantic continued to fight back, leaving the game close. A final push from Mid-Atlantic pushed them over the top and gave them the 57-53 victory, handing Christendom their first loss on the season. Thomas played exceptionally well again in the loss, scoring 23 points and making 17 rebounds.
Also on Saturday, the men’s team took on Mid-Atlantic, looking to remain undefeated on their season. Mid-Atlantic outplayed Christendom in the first half, taking a 31-26 lead into the second. Christendom refused to back down, however, with the team playing well on both sides of the ball the rest of the way. John Paul Vander Woude scored 19 points, while Andrew Heisler put up 11 of his own. With minutes left to play, Christendom took the lead and never looked back, winning 66-64.
The men’s team will play their final game of the fall semester on Tuesday at home, while the women’s team is now off until January 14.
