Robert Cardinal Sarah.

Internationally renowned author and theologian Robert Cardinal Sarah will be honored during Christendom College’s 2022 Commencement Ceremonies this upcoming May 13-14 on Christendom’s Front Royal, Virginia campus. The former Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Sarah will be given an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the ceremonies and will also deliver this year’s commencement address.

“From my first meeting with him in Rome, I was so impressed by Cardinal Sarah’s deep faith and warmth, and I was able to share the great work of Christendom College with him,” says College President Dr. Timothy O’Donnell. “He expressed an interest in visiting our campus then and we are now delighted to announce that he will be speaking at our Commencement Ceremonies this May. His love for Christ and His Church has been evident for decades now, particularly through his beautiful writings, which have inspired millions across the globe. We will be honored by his presence and will be delighted to bestow on him the college’s honorary doctorate of humane letters during our Commencement Ceremonies.”

Born in French Guinea, Cardinal Sarah was ordained to the priesthood in 1969 and was named an Archbishop by Pope St. John Paul II in 1979. Cardinal Sarah held that position for 20 years, including under the dictatorship of Ahmed Sekou Toure, who put Cardinal Sarah on a death-list before dying in 1984. Despite the persecutions of priests and laymen, Cardinal Sarah worked to maintain the Catholic Church as the one institution independent of the dictatorship.

In 2001, Pope St. John Paul II named him Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, a post he held for ten years. In October of 2010, he a was appointed president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum which carries responsibility for organizing Catholic relief efforts worldwide, and the following month he was named a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. Four years later, Cardinal Sarah was appointed as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, a post he held until 2021.

Cardinal Sarah is also a well-regarded author and theologian whose writings have inspired countless souls across the globe. His major works include: God or Nothing: A Conversation on Faith, The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise, The Day is Now Far Spent, Couples, Awaken Your Love, and From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy, and the Crisis of the Catholic Church, which he co-authored with Pope Benedict XVI.

Christendom has been honored to welcome distinguished guests to its Commencement Ceremonies in years past, including Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Gerhard Cardinal Muller, Lou Holtz, Patrick Madrid, Alice von Hildebrand, Senator Rick Santorum, and others.
