Christendom’s women’s basketball team won the Eastern States Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday night, defeating Central Penn 74-45. The win earned the women’s basketball team their first Conference Championship, placing them well on their way to a USCAA National Championship selection next week.

The women’s basketball team went an incredible 22-5 during the regular season, which included only losing one game in their final month of the season. That stretch helped give them the top seed in the Conference Championship game, earning them home-court advantage for the game.

From the jump, Christendom took control of the game, outscoring Central Penn and holding off their offense. Christendom’s own robust offense, led by Catherine Thomas and Mary Pennefather, came at Central Penn hard, showing why the team played one of their best regular seasons ever this year. By the end of the first half, Christendom led 38-27 and never looked back, ultimately winning 74-45 to secure the Conference Championship.

Thomas led the team in points scored with 22, while Regina Bonvissuto played one of her best games of the season, putting up 18 points. Pennefather, meanwhile, put up her latest triple-double, scoring 15 points and making 13 rebounds and 13 assists in the Conference Championship game.

With the Conference Championship win, the women’s basketball team now sits at 23-5 on the season. Thomas and Pennefather led the USCAA in points per game over the course of the season, with 27.3 and 24.6 ppg respectively, and total points scored, with 601 and 566 respectively. Thomas was also third in the USCAA in rebounds per game, while Pennefather was third in 3PT percentage.

The team, currently ranked #8 in the USCAA, now waits to hear if they will be selected to the USCAA National Championship tournament, which will be played in Richmond, Virginia, March 10-13.
