Christendom’s men’s baseball team pulled off a rousing comeback on Senior Day this past weekend, walking off Kent St.-Tuscarawas 10-9 in front of a roaring crowd. The win sealed a double-header sweep for Christendom after they defeated Kent St. 3-1 in a pitcher’s duel earlier in the day.
Taking on Kent St. for the first time this season, Christendom jumped ahead of the team early, grabbing a 3-1 lead by the fourth inning thanks to clutch RBIs from Peter Sullivan and Will Coleman. From there, the game was all about starting pitcher John Skuba, who shut down Kent St.’s offense in a complete game for Christendom. Skuba struck out nine in the effort, giving Christendom a big one to start off Senior Day.
In the second game, Christendom’s offense kept rolling, putting up an early 7-0 lead over Kent St. Some tough errors cost Christendom, however, and they soon found themselves in an 8-8 tie by the fifth inning. Kent St. managed to grab a late run in the ninth inning to take a 9-8 lead over Christendom, forcing the home team to play from behind in the final frame of the game. With their backs against the wall, the team shined, grinding out at-bats and finally breaking through Kent St.’s pitching for the first time since the fifth inning. The team ultimately walked off the game, winning 10-9 and pulling off the double-header sweep.
Paul Amuso, Thomas Sullivan, Matt O’Hara, Gus Coleman, Anthony Pegis, and Peter Sullivan all drove in runs for Christendom in the game, while Thomas Sullivan also struck out seven in a strong effort from the mound.
The team will play their final games of the season this weekend, taking on Central Penn on the road before playing Williamson in a double-header on Sunday at Bing Crosby Stadium.
