Christendom’s women’s soccer team delivered another dominating performance in a packed Christendom Athletics weekend, cruising past Penn State New Kensington 8-2 on Saturday to secure their fourth consecutive win.

Christendom’s women’s soccer team has been on fire to start the season, with an impressive 25-1 scoring differential coming into their Saturday matchup against Penn State New Kensington. Penn managed to get on the board first, finding the back of the net within the first four minutes. But Christendom wasted no time with a response — Mary Curran leveled the score before Christendom took over the game from there. Goals from Theresa Luckey, Georgia Francis, and Juliana Taylor gave Christendom a commanding 4-1 halftime lead. Luckey wasn’t done, netting two more in the second half to complete her hat trick, while Miranda Keller and Catherine Thomas added to the goal fest.

The team now looks ahead to a home game against Central Penn on September 21.

On the men’s side, Christendom’s soccer team came up clutch in a nail-biter against Penn State New Kensington. It was a defensive battle, with Michael Vander Woude standing tall in goal, saving 16 shots. Christendom, on the other side, managed to only connect one shot on goal — but it was the only one that mattered. Joshua Cruz scored a goal in the 24th minute that held the rest of the way, lifting Christendom to a 1-0 win.

Just a day later, the Crusaders took on Penn State Beaver. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Francis Gulick and Cruz, they saw Beaver rally back, tying the game 2-2 early in the second half. Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the game, resulting in a hard-fought draw. Christendom now shifts their focus to a Tuesday road game against Patrick Henry.

The women’s volleyball team, coming off a tri-match split last Saturday, traveled to Trinity on Thursday, looking to pick up their third win of the season. Christendom took the court with authority, sweeping Trinity in three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-10) behind standout performances from Lucy Stahl and Maureen Coffey.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Christendom battled in a tri-match at Mid-Atlantic Christian. They fell short in a grueling 3-2 match against the host team but bounced back later that day, sweeping Trinity once again. Next up, they’ll face Penn State Mont Alto on September 19.

Back at home, the men’s rugby team took Crusader Fields for their home opener on Saturday, looking to bounce back after a tough 22-17 loss to Franciscan University of Steubenville in the annual Shield Match. James Madison University had different ideas, however, jumping to an early 10-0 lead. Chris Usher cut that lead in half with a try, but, from there, it was all James Madison for the rest of the half. Late tries from Dan Shay and Jimmy Coffey made the scoreline a little more respectable, but JMU proved too strong on the day, winning 58-31.

Christendom will get another chance to rebound when they host the University of Virginia on September 21.
