Christendom’s women’s soccer team cannot be stopped. The team finished the month of September with a perfect record, winning all seven of their games played — including a 3-0 shutout of Patrick Henry on Monday, their fifth shutout of the season with a full month of play left to go.
The women’s soccer team’s play over the past month has been unprecedented in program history, with the team’s performance earning them a #1 national ranking from the USCAA for the first time ever. Following shutouts of Central Penn and Trinity in their last two games, the team looked to earn another win against Patrick Henry on the road on Monday.
Christendom jumped on the board early, thanks to a goal from Miranda Keller at the 17:00 minute mark. Ava Hudson soon followed with a goal of her own to close the second half, with Theresa Luckey sealing the win with a goal late in the second half. Christendom won again, 3-0 — their seventh straight. Serena Keller put up her league-leading fourth shutout of the season in the win, with the team looking to continue their streak against Penn State Mont Alto on Wednesday, October 2, at home.
Men’s Rugby
Meanwhile, the men’s rugby team hit the road over the weekend, looking to pick up their first win of the season against Hampden-Sydney College. The team took the lead early on a try from Luke Ethridge before Hampden-Sydney fought back to a 19-7 lead over Christendom. The Crusaders, however, refused to yield, with Frank Woltering and Jude Burkett scoring tries to even the score. Burkett would score again to give Christendom the lead, before Hampden-Sydney tied the game again. With minutes left, Hampden-Sydney made two costly penalties, giving Chris Santschi the opportunity to score on two penalty kicks — which he drained. Final score: 30-19, Christendom, giving the team their first W of the season.
The team will next play against Washington & Lee on Saturday, October 5.
Women’s Volleyball
Back at home, the women’s volleyball team looked to bounce back from a tough loss against Washington Adventist last Wednesday, hosting Regent and Mid-Atlantic Christian for a tri-match. The team fought hard against Regent in the first match, but Regent managed to overpower the team, winning in straight sets. Christendom’s Aimee Simpson had an outstanding game coming off an injury, picking up 23 digs in the match.
In the second game, Christendom took control over Mid-Atlantic from the jump, winning the first set 25-16. That win gave the team the momentum they needed to take the second set as well, 25-18. Mid-Atlantic, however, refused to back down, taking the next two hard-fought sets. In the fifth, Christendom took control once again, winning 15-11 to take the game. Mary Pennefather led the team with 20 points in the match, giving the team their sixth win of the season.
The team will next play Kent St.-Tuscarawas at home on Friday, October 4.
