Christendom’s women’s soccer team kept their historic streak alive on Saturday, holding Johnson & Wales to a 0-0 tie in a defensive thriller. The women’s soccer team has not lost a game since their opening matchup of the season, with only two games left on the calendar for the regular season.
The women’s soccer team, following a nine-game winning streak that lasted the entire month of September, fought to their first tie of the season against Hagerstown last Tuesday. The game was an incredible battle, with the first goal not coming until the 53:33 mark. That goal, scored by Hagerstown, ended one of the longest streaks of Christendom’s season — 533 consecutive minutes of not allowing a goal against. It was the first time Christendom had been behind in a game since September 14, but it would not last long. Colleen Kosten tied the game three minutes later, with that score standing by the 90:00-minute mark.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Johnson & Wales for their first game against the team of the season. The matchup was a defensive thriller, with Christendom struggling to break through Johnson & Wales’ defense. Johnson & Wales had similar struggles, though managed to make 10 shots on goal — all blocked by Miranda Keller. Both teams fought to a 0-0 tie, preserving Christendom’s streak. The team now stands at 9-1-2 on the season, with just two games left on the schedule.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team, meanwhile, entered the weekend on a streak of their own, winning back-to-back games against Patrick Henry and Penn State Mont Alto earlier in the week at home — both shutouts. On Saturday, they traveled to Penn State Greater Allegheny to take on that team, quickly going up 1-0 within the first six seconds, thanks to a killer strike from Sean Corcoran. Penn State tied the game just three minutes later, with both defenses taking over from there. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, giving the men’s soccer team a 6-5-1 record currently on the season. They will next play Penn State York at home on Wednesday, October 16.
Men’s Rugby
The men’s rugby team, coming off back-to-back wins on the road against Hampden-Sydney and Washington & Lee, took on VMI at home on Saturday. VMI jumped to an early 14-0 lead over Christendom, before Dan Shea scored a try to narrow that lead. VMI scored again, before Chris Santschi again narrowed that lead with a penalty kick. Santschi and Jacob Kristine would both later score tries to give Christendom a narrow 20-19 lead — their first of the day.
VMI, however, refused to yield. They scored back-to-back tries to take a 33-20 lead with the minutes ticking down on the clock. As the Christendom crowd roared, Shea scored again for Christendom, bringing the score within 8. Christendom pushed down the field again, with Fionn punching across the try line to bring Christendom within one. VMI suddenly made a late penalty on Christendom, giving them a crucial penalty kick — and a chance at a game winner. David Foeckler missed on a heartbreaker, giving Christendom a tough 33-32 loss. The team will next play Hampden-Sydney in their regular season closer on November 2 at home.
Women’s Volleyball
Back at home, the women’s volleyball team welcomed Penn State York and Appalachian Bible for a tri-match in St. Louis the Crusader Gymnasium. Despite a resilient showing from Christendom, the team unfortunately fell in their first match against Penn State York, 3-1. They immediately bounced back in the second, however, defeating Appalachian in straight sets, 3-0. The team, now 8-8 on the season, will next play Penn State Mont Alto at home on Thursday, October 17, their final home game of the season.
