Christendom College has been ranked by the Cardinal Newman Society as one of the top Catholic colleges in the nation, earning a full recommendation in The Newman Guide.
Published annually, The Newman Guide fully recommends sixteen colleges in the United States and five international institutions, while provisionally recommending an additional five colleges both domestically and abroad. Schools included in the Guide are evaluated according to rigorous standards of Catholic identity and faithfulness.
“When an elementary or secondary school, college, or graduate program is recognized in The Newman Guide, you can be confident that it meets our high standards of uncompromised Catholic fidelity and formation in the light of the Catholic faith,” the Guide states.
Christendom College has been recommended by The Newman Guide since its inception nearly two decades ago. According to Sam Phillips, Christendom’s director of admissions, the Guide plays an important role in helping families discern authentic Catholic education.
“Over nearly two decades, The Newman Guide has recommended a growing variety of options for families with varying needs, including Christendom College from the very start,” says Phillips. “And although not every Newman Guide recommended school is the same, it is very important for families to understand the differences between a faithful Catholic education and one that is not, as well as to explore the differences amongst the Newman Guide schools.”
According to the Guide, Christendom “demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to faithful education and formation, refusing to compromise on things like opposite-sex visitation in residences and accepting government aid. Christendom is a good size for maintaining a close-knit community, attending to students by name, and preserving fidelity and excellence among the faculty.”
In contrast to rankings based on secular or ambiguous standards, The Newman Guide emphasizes the lasting impact of education on students’ faith and character.
“If large numbers of students lose their faith — or fail to become wise and virtuous — then are they really getting a ‘good’ education?” the Guide asks. “And at what cost?”
In a prior edition of the Guide, the Cardinal Newman Society offered especially high praise for Christendom’s Catholic identity.
“It would be difficult for Christendom to have a fuller Catholic identity,” the Guide stated. “It truly permeates the campus. You can see it, you can feel it. They are justifiably proud of presenting Catholicism as ‘the air that we breathe.’ Christendom College has made a vital contribution to American Catholic life through its solid spiritual formation and liberal arts curriculum. While some colleges in this Guide may match its Catholic commitment, it is unlikely that any exceeds it.”
