Alumna Joan Watson ‘06 has released a new book, Making a Pilgrimage: A Companion for Catholics. Published by Emmaus Road Publishing, the new work gives readers a comprehensive look at the background and profound significance of pilgrimages, while also giving practical advice for Catholics on how to make a good pilgrimage.

Watson earned her bachelor’s degree from Christendom in 2006 and has been working for the Church and various religious apostolates ever since, using her Christendom education to impact the Church for the better. In her newest work, Watson utilizes her knowledge as a Catholic writer as well as her years of experience as a tour guide for Verso Ministries Catholic Pilgrimages to delve into the biblical history and significance of pilgrimages, using the insights of saints and spiritual writers and her own personal pilgrimages to supplement this rich background. In addition, Watson includes practical and spiritual recommendations for those going on pilgrimage and provides a list of Catholic pilgrimage sites across the world, urging readers to use these opportunities to draw closer to God.

“Joan Watson masterfully weaves theology, Scripture, and history with personal experience as she delves into the pilgrim’s heart. Making a Pilgrimage is a thoughtful reflection on the most important journey we can make in our lifetime—the pilgrim’s journey to be one with God in heaven,” says John Paul Lichon, founder of Verso Ministries Catholic Pilgrimages. “No matter where you are on the journey of life, this book will encourage you to go farther, deeper, and more prayerfully toward God’s loving embrace.”

Watson is the associate editor of Integrated Catholic Life and the pilgrim formation manager for Verso Ministries. Following her time at Christendom, Watson earned a master’s degree in theology and Christian ministry from Franciscan University of Steubenville. She is the founder of Living 1 John 1, an online community dedicated to helping Catholics pray and love scripture.

Watson’s new book is the latest addition to a long list of publications by Christendom alumni, including Witness to Love by Mary-Rose Verret ‘04, God’s Wounds by John Clark ‘92, and Know Thyself by Andrew Youngblood ‘93. Watson previously released her book Opening the Holy Door, an examination and reflection of the artistic and spiritual imagery of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Making a Pilgrimage is available for purchase through Emmaus Road Publishing and Amazon.
