Christendom College theology professor Dr. Matthew Tsakanikas has released a new booklet, Meditations on Deification and the Luminous Mysteries, offering Catholics a deep spiritual guide to prayer and contemplation through the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. The booklet serves as a companion to his widely recommended 2025 work, A Catechesis on Deification, Transfiguration & the Luminous Mysteries, expanding upon its themes with a renewed focus on the mystical approach of Saint Catherine of Siena and an emphasis on the Beatitudes, along with deeper theological reflection.
After teaching on the topic at an undergraduate and graduate level for twenty years, Tsakanikas wanted to develop his earlier work, A Catechesis on Deification, further, resulting in this companion booklet.
“This work is a gift to the Church—at once intellectually rigorous and spiritually luminous,” says Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, O.P., president of En Route Books & Media. “Tsakanikas leads the reader beyond reflection into encounter, where theology becomes prayer and the mysteries of Christ become a path to transformation.”
A longtime member of Christendom’s theology faculty, Tsakanikas earned his B.A. from Christendom College and his S.T.L. and S.T.D. from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, Pontifical University of the Lateran. Tsakanikas specializes in the Book of Genesis, theological anthropology, including Thomistic moral theology, and the writings of St. Lawrence Brindisi. His writings have been featured in Communio, Logos, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and Catholic World Report.
His previous book, A Catechesis on Deification, Transfiguration & the Luminous Mysteries, received praise for presenting the ancient Christian doctrine of deification in an accessible and practical way for modern Catholics.
“Whatever one’s level of theological education or none, these reflections on deification and the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary are rich in theological insights and scriptural exegesis,” said Professor Tracey Rowland of the University of Notre Dame, author of Ratzinger’s Faith, and previous Christendom commencement speaker.
With this new companion volume, Tsakanikas continues Christendom’s mission of making the riches of the Catholic intellectual tradition accessible to the faithful, offering readers a deeper appreciation of the mysteries of Christ’s life and their own call to holiness.
The Catholic Diocese of Arlington recently approved the booklet for distribution in parish booklet racks, subject to each pastor’s approval. The booklet is also available in print in Christ the King Chapel at Christendom College.
