Christendom’s women’s volleyball team scored their first win of the season in resounding fashion on Saturday, defeating Penn State Beaver during the annual USCAA Tip-Off Tournament in Pennsylvania. The game marked the only win of the weekend for the team, with men’s soccer and women’s soccer also falling in games against Mary Baldwin University.

After winning their opening exhibition match against Central Penn on August 31, the women’s volleyball team entered the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament looking to start their 2022 season strong. Taking on Kent St.-Tuscarawas, Christendom played hard, losing the first set but taking the second. Kent St.-Tuscarawas was able to bounce back in the final two sets, however, ultimately taking the game 3-1 despite strong performances from Claire Mense and Nora Ross.

In the second game against Penn State Beaver, Mense and Ross again led the way for Christendom, helping the team hold off Penn State Beaver in a close first set before dominating in the second. Christendom ultimately won the third set easily, sweeping their way to their first win of the season. Their final game of the tournament proved to be a touch matchup for the volleyball team, with Christendom falling in straight sets to Penn State Allegheny.

Meanwhile at home, the men’s soccer team looked to bounce back from their tough 7-0 loss to Frederick CC in their season opener. Playing against Mary Baldwin on Thursday, the teams held each other to a stalemate for most of the game before Mary Baldwin finally scored at the 70:00 mark. Michael Blank was able to bring the score closer at 3-1, but Mary Baldwin continued their onslaught, ultimately winning the game 6-1.

The women’s soccer team also took on Mary Baldwin, facing off against the team on Friday, September 2. The team, coming off a shutout win of Frederick CC to start their season, held Mary Baldwin to a 1-0 lead for most of the game before Catherine Thomas dramatically tied it at the 73:16 mark. With only minutes left in the game, however, Mary Baldwin was able to regain the lead, ultimately winning 3-1.

The women’s soccer team will play their season opener against Hagerstown on September 6, while the men’s soccer team will next play at home against Berkeley-NJ on September 9. The women’s volleyball team will take on Notre Dame of Maryland on September 8 before returning home to take on Regent University on September 10.
