Christendom College is the winner of the USCAA’s 2023 President’s Cup, as announced by the collegiate sports organization this week. The award, which is given to the athletic department that scores the best in academic performance in the association, is Christendom’s third in the past five years.
Over the course of the past academic year, Christendom’s student-athletes worked hard to achieve success both on and off the field. Overall, Christendom’s varsity sports teams achieved a cumulative GPA average of 3.42 for the 2022-23 season, with the top five teams averaging a 3.58 GPA — including the women’s basketball team with a 3.80 GPA.
In addition, 41 total Christendom student-athletes earned USCAA National Academic All-American honors. To be named an Academic All-American, an athlete must achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA, all while participating in a varsity sport. While participating in a varsity sport is demanding, these students showed the ability to prioritize their studies and balance commitments — a trademark of Christendom’s athletic program.
This year’s USCAA National Academic All-Americans include Colleen Kosten (twice), Lucia Vincenzino, Erin Hatley, Mary Sabados (twice), Miranda Keller (twice), Grace Russo, Josie Belleville, Catherine Thomas (twice), Joe Madigan, Michael Townsend (twice), Sean Corcoran, Mark Taylor, John Paul Tsakanikas, Josh Cruz, Fiona Briggs, Catherine Brezinsky, Eibhilin McCloskey, Hannah Simpson, Dineen Evich, Amelia Coleman, Margaret Kolesar, Mary Noble, Elizabeth Kuss, Kate Walz, Bridget McCaughey (twice), Regina Bonvissuto, Lili Speier, Andrew Heisler, John Paul Vander Woude, Peter Ethridge, Lauren Pelletier, Lizzie Scarchilli, Dermot Dolowy, John Skuba, and Joseph Piroch.
The USCAA President’s Cup is voted on each year by the USCAA President’s Cup committee, which rewards points to institutions based on their rank against other institutions in program GPA, All-Academic award winners (3.5 GPA+ individuals), and overall athletic department GPA.
Since the award’s inception in 2018, Christendom has won the award 3 times and placed third and second as well — a testament to the college’s strength in balancing sports success with academic excellence.
