Christendom’s women’s basketball team picked up their twelfth win of the season at home on Thursday, defeating NCAA DIII Trinity University handily 82-30. Both the men’s and women’s teams also fell on the road, however, to Penn State Beaver on Saturday in close matchups to close out the weekend, with one game left for each this month.
After a rolling start to January, the women’s basketball team dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, setting their home matchup against Trinity on Thursday as a crucial moment to get the team back on track. The team did so right from the jump, going up 51-16 on Trinity by the end of the first half. Trinity never had a chance to catch up from there, struggling to do anything against Christendom’s defense. Christendom ultimately won 82-30, with Catherine Thomas leading the team with 24 points and 13 assists, with Miranda Keller right behind her with 19 points and 12 assists.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Pennsylvania to take on Penn State Beaver for the first time this season. The team proved a tough matchup for Christendom, with Christendom not outscoring Penn until the third quarter. By then, Penn had too strong a lead though and ended up winning 73-55, handing Christendom their third loss of the season. Thomas again led the team with 20 points and 11 assists, whole Keller put up 18 points and 8 assists. The team now stands at 12-4 on the season.
The men’s basketball team, meanwhile, also traveled to Pennsylvania to take on Penn State Beaver. Looking to bounce back from a loss to McDaniel on the road earlier in the week, the team played hard in the first half, keeping the game close at 28-31 in favor of Penn. The game just barely began to slip away in the second half, however, with Penn coming out on top 63-53 to win the game. John Paul Vander Woude led the team with 18 points, while Peter Ethridge was right behind him with 14 points. With the loss, the men’s basketball team now stands at 8-6 on the season.
Both teams will close out the month of January on the road, taking on Frederick CC on Wednesday, January 31.
