This past Friday and Saturday marked the opening weekend for the 2024-25 Christendom Athletics season, with most of the fall varsity sports in play. Christendom’s men’s soccer team split a pair of games in the Mont Alto Labor Day Classic to kick off their fall season, winning 4-1 over Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women’s volleyball team finished 1-2 in the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament and the women’s soccer team fell 3-0 at home.

The men’s soccer team traveled to Pennsylvania for the Mont Alto Labor Day Classic, taking on Berkeley-NJ in their first game of the season. Christendom started off hot with a goal from Michael Townsend, holding onto that lead for the entire first half. Berkeley managed to rally in the second half, however, ultimately taking an 8-1 win over Christendom.

The team bounced right back the next day against Penn State Mont Alto, with Niall Maguire giving the team a 1-0 lead early in that game. Townsend and Isaias Odiatu soon followed Maguire, scoring goals of their own to give Christendom a 3-0 lead to end the first half. Penn State managed to grab a goal in the second half, but Townsend followed soon after with another goal of his own. Christendom ultimately won 4-1, grabbing their first win of the season.

They will continue their road trip on September 3, taking on Central Penn.

Meanwhile, also on the road in Pennsylvania, the women’s volleyball team started their season with the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament, taking on Penn State New Kensington in their first match. While the team started off slow in the first set, Christendom fought hard the rest of the game, bringing the game to four sets before ultimately falling 25-21 in the final set.

In their second match, the team took on Penn State Beaver, winning a tight first set before falling in the second. Christendom rallied to win the next two sets by the same score, 25-19, securing their first win of the season. Elizabeth Heisler led the way for Christendom with 8 kills and 11.5 points in the match.

The third match against Florida National proved to be their toughest yet, with Christendom falling 3-0 against the opponent.

Following this tournament, the team will return home for a tri-match on September 7, taking on Penn State Kensington and Penn State Shenango.

Back at home, the women’s soccer team took on Hollins in their first game of the season. Hollins came out of the gate on the attack, scoring 3 goals within the first 30 minutes of the game. Christendom’s defense held them off from there, but the offense was unable to break through Hollins, resulting in a 3-0 loss.

The women’s soccer team will next take on Patrick Henry at home on September 4.

The men’s rugby team will also kick off their season next weekend, playing Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio in the annual Shield Rugby Match.
