Christendom College philosophy professor Dr. John Cuddeback has just published a new book with Ignatius Press, The Intentional Household: Living as if People Matter. Now available online and soon in stores, the book invokes timeless wisdom to breathe new life into homes, providing profound directions for crafting the shared life people naturally crave for themselves and their loved ones.

Cuddeback has spent years teaching, speaking, and writing about the household, a subject that has become a central focus of his work. His new book is the fruit of extensive research, teaching, and discussion, crafted as a life-changing and life-giving resource for anyone concerned with how to renew life in the home.

“Renewing life today must start in the home. This seems obvious, but it is much more demanding than it seems. Forging a home life that answers to the richness of God’s plan requires an extraordinary, intentional effort. And this effort must be rooted in a clear understanding of principles and a prudent discernment of how to enact them in today’s bewildering context,” says Cuddeback. “I do not purport to have all the answers. Yet this accessible synthesis uniquely applies a timeless wisdom to the practical concerns that should be at the forefront of our consideration.”

The Intentional Household is Cuddeback’s latest book, following his popular True Friendship, also published by Ignatius Press. A member of the Christendom faculty for nearly 30 years, Cuddeback has inspired generations of students through his teaching. His work has appeared in numerous academic journals and books, and he regularly writes for his website, LifeCraft, where he brings ancient wisdom to modern readers while also offering free courses and summer retreats. Cuddeback is also the host of the Intentional Household podcast, which he co-hosts with his wife, Sofia, tackling new topics related to the household in each episode.

Cuddeback’s book has already received strong praise ahead of its release, including from Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P.

“This book has its finger on the pulse: Unrest arises when we wander from home. Dr. Cuddeback shows that the household is where we learn love and responsibility, work and leisure. He offers enduring principles for reclaiming home as the place where people come first and where we flourish as creatures.”

Popular author Edward Sri, Ph.D., has also spoken highly of the book.

“The Intentional Household sheds light on how families today can approach work, leisure, technology, the Sabbath, and childrearing in a way that is much more spiritually life-giving—in a way that prepares family members to encounter God and each other more by truly living as if people matter.”
