Christendom’s men’s soccer team continued its impressive start to the fall season this past week, earning another shutout victory to improve to 5-1, while men’s rugby broke through with a 78-0 road victory over Christopher Newport University for its first win of the season. Women’s volleyball also picked up a road victory over Central Penn before dropping three matches later in the week, while women’s soccer suffered a pair of home losses.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team looked to keep its winning streak alive on Saturday, welcoming Manor to Christendom’s Crusader Field. Philip Vander Woude, the team’s leading scorer, got Christendom on the board in the first half with a key goal, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The team’s second-leading scorer, Luke Vander Woude, gave Christendom some breathing room with a penalty kick goal in the 78th minute. He added his second goal late in the match to seal the 3-0 victory for Christendom. The team now stands at 5-1 on the season.
Women’s Soccer
Riding a three-game winning streak, the women’s soccer team hosted Mary Baldwin at home on Tuesday, aiming to keep its early-season momentum going. Mary Baldwin, however, had different plans, putting an all-out assault on Christendom’s net over the first 30 minutes, scoring four goals before the end of the first half. Maria Blank got Christendom on the board with a penalty kick to start the second half, but Mary Baldwin ultimately prevailed 6-1.
On Saturday, the Crusaders hosted Salem University, with both teams playing a tightly contested defensive match. Salem managed to find the back of the net once, however, which proved to be enough. Christendom fell 1-0, dropping to 4-3 on the season.
Men’s Rugby
The men’s rugby team traveled to Christopher Newport University this past weekend, still searching for its first win of the season. The young team, which made significant strides in its 34-19 loss to the University of Virginia the previous week, showed even more improvement in its kicking game and field positioning this week. The results spoke for themselves, with ten different Crusaders scoring tries while the defense shut out Christopher Newport, powering Christendom to a resounding 78-0 victory and its first win of the season. The Crusaders now stand at 1-2.
Women’s Volleyball
Coming off its second consecutive tri-match sweep over the weekend, Christendom’s women’s volleyball team traveled to Central Penn on Monday, quickly establishing itself with wins in the first two sets. Central Penn fought back to take a tight third set, but Christendom responded in the fourth, prevailing 25-23 to secure the 3-1 victory.
Serenity Fedoryka led the team with 10 points and seven kills in the match, helping Christendom improve to 6-2.
On Wednesday, the team traveled to Mary Baldwin, falling 3-1 to snap its winning streak. The competition continued Saturday in a tri-match at Washington College, with Christendom falling in straight sets to both Rutgers-Camden and Washington. Fedoryka again led the team in scoring in the first match, while the Crusaders struggled offensively in the second. Christendom now stands at 6-5 on the season.
