Crusader Sports Teams Prepare for Challenging Fall Season

Christendom’s athletic program launched into action this past week, with all five fall sports teams beginning their training for the upcoming seasons. Under the leadership of their coaching staffs and athletic director Patrick Quest, the teams are aiming to top the great success of last year against some of the nation’s biggest schools, including Duke University.
“We had a terrific year in athletics last year, winning incredible games and tournaments. Even more than the games won, our student-athletes showed tremendous leadership and perseverance on and off the field and in the classroom, setting an example for the school and other teams in the process,” says Quest. “This year, we only want to improve on that, and compete on an even higher level. With last week’s mini-camps and this week’s tryouts, we’re already making great strides toward those goals, and I cannot wait to see our student-athletes make the school proud in the coming weeks and months.”
The men’s and women’s soccer teams arrived on campus last week for mini-camps, running drills and devising strategies throughout the week as they prepare to begin their seasons on August 30 at home. Both teams excelled last fall, with the men finishing 10-3-1 and the women finishing 7-2-1. Such success earned both squads national recognition, with each team being ranked as high as #8 in the USCAA Coaches’ Poll over the course of the season.
Women’s volleyball hit the court last week, as they prepare to begin their season on August 26-27 with the USCAA’s annual Tipoff Classic tournament. The volleyball program exceeded expectations last year, finishing the season 11-6 with a very young and talented team — strong enough for the #11 best winning percentage in the nation.
One of the college’s newest teams, the men’s and women’s cross-country team, met for their first mini-camp last week, preparing for their full season of meets. They will launch into competition on September 1 at Bridgewater College, before running in meets at James Madison University and George Mason University, among others, later in the year.
The college’s highly successful men’s rugby team is preparing for their first full fall season, beginning on September 17 at home against nationally-recognized Duke University, after upsetting them last spring. The Crusaders set school records in wins last year with a 20-5 record, while sweeping two tournaments and defending the Shield Trophy from the Franciscan University of Steubenville along the way.
