This Saturday, June 6, Rev. Mr. Peter McShurley (’14) will be ordained to the priesthood in Christendom’s home Diocese of Arlington. Deacon McShurley’s ordination will make him the eighteenth alumnus priest in the diocese — a tremendous testimony to the impact Christendom’s alumni have had on countless souls in Virginia.

Since graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Christendom in 2014, Deacon McShurley has studied at St. Charles Borromeo seminary and at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. While there, he once served as crosier-bearer for Pope Francis and, upon his return to the United States and his ordination to the diaconate last summer, he served with Bishop Michael Burbidge at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington.

When he is ordained on June 6 by Bishop Burbidge, Deacon McShurley will join a special group of alumni that have discerned vocations to the priesthood in Christendom’s home diocese. Since 1977, seventeen alumni have been ordained within the diocese, including Fr. Carroll Oubre, Fr. Tom Vander Woude, Fr. Joseph Kenna, Fr. Bjorn Lundberg, Fr. Noah Morey, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler, Fr. Steve McGraw, Fr. John Heisler, Fr. Vincent Bork, Fr. Kevin Beres, Fr. Michael Taylor, Fr. Kevin Walsh, Fr. Francis Peffley, Fr. Joseph Farrell, Fr. Nicholas Blank, Fr. Christopher Tipton, and Fr. Denis Donahue. Deacon McShurley will join them as the eighteenth and will serve as parochial vicar at St. Agnes Parish following his ordination.

Deacon McShurley’s ordination this Saturday follows the ordination of alumnus Fr. David McWhirter, who became on FSSP priest on Monday, June 1. Later this month on June 27, Rev. Mr. Miguel Flores-Perez (’02) will be ordained in the Archdiocese of Military Services.

Next weekend on June 13, three other alumni will also be ordained to the transitional diaconate for the Diocese of Arlington: Deacon McShurley’s classmate, Jonathan Fioramonti (‘14), John Paul Heisler (’17), and Joseph Townsend (’11).
