The Christendom Players brought acclaimed musical My Fair Lady to life onstage this past weekend, April 16-18, 2021. The college’s annual spring musical provided a wonderful weekend of entertainment for the Christendom community, complete with amazing choreography, an impressive set, and superb acting from the Christendom Players, showcasing the best theatrical talent Christendom has to offer.

Directed by alumna Elizabeth Foeckler, My Fair Lady combined entertaining musical numbers with great acting and staging. Based on the award-winning Broadway production, My Fair Lady follows Eliza Doolittle, a flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she may pass as a lady.

Laughter and joy filled Christendom’s St. Lawrence Commons as popular songs, including “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “On the Street Where You Live,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night,” were performed by the talented cast. Each performance received high praise from students, faculty, and staff who attended, and the cast kept up the energy for all three shows.

“It is always incredible to me what these students are able to pull off,” said Foeckler. “We all know how much is asked of them academically, with such a rigorous workload, so to then take on this additional huge project and do it so very well is amazing. The amount of work that went in behind the scenes is astounding, and they should be so proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

My Fair Lady was originally scheduled to be performed last spring before Christendom’s campus closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the three performances took on a special significance for the cast and crew who were grateful to finally perform the show.

“For this show to finally happen for these students was such a gift,” concluded Foeckler. “I think it was an important thing for a lot of them to experience — regardless of life’s setbacks, and the curveballs we are sometimes thrown, determination, purpose, and hard work can do incredible things. I hope that they all walk away from this knowing that if they set their minds to a project, that with the proper effort, they are unstoppable.”

The Christendom Players are a student-run group that performs two theatrical productions a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. In the past, the group has performed Les MiserablesThe Crucible, The Drowsy Chaperone, Hello, Dolly!, Anything Goes, and other elaborate productions.
